Vergleich der neuen Generation: Audi A5 Avant (2024) tritt gegen den A4 Avant (2024) an
The Audi A5 Avant, set to debut in 2024, is pitted against the 2024 version of its predecessor, the A4 Avant. We're examining the changes between the outgoing model and its successor. The A4 Avant's replacement has finally arrived, and it's undergoing a name change. The combustion engine versions of Audi's midsize class are moving up a digit in their naming convention. From now on, even numbers will denote electric models, while odd numbers will continue to represent vehicles powered by fossil fuels. Thus, the A5 becomes the new A4, while the A4 retains its name. It's a simple yet perplexing update.
The A5 Sport Coupe and Convertible have been discontinued. It seems that nowadays, coupes are exclusively associated with elevated rides. Therefore, we're moving into a territory where we can compare an A4 Avant with its successor, the new A5 Avant. So, go ahead and erase what you've previously known from your memory and be open to the new. How does the new A4, now dubbed the A5, stack up against its predecessor? Let's dive in…

Exterior Features
A quick review of the specifications indicates that the A5 is set to increase in size once again. Continuing the trend seen in previous iterations, the latest model adds a few more centimeters. While the A4 Avant was just short of 4.76 meters in length, the A5 Avant grows to a length of 4.83 meters, adding nearly seven centimeters. The wheelbase also sees significant growth, extending by eight centimeters to reach 2.90 meters. In the images, the new A5 Avant is always depicted on the left, with its predecessor positioned on the right.
Let's turn our attention to the front end design. The expansive grille has been reduced in size and no longer extends to the bottom of the bumper. Instead, there's now a larger air intake occupying this space, flanked by two additional, vertically-aligned openings on either side. The headlights have also shrunk, tapering elegantly towards the vehicle's side profile. One might wonder if there's a hint of Ford Mondeo influence here, or is it simply a design evolution driven by the need for aerodynamic efficiency?
The sideline largely remains the same, with door handles now seamlessly blended into the bodywork. However, what stands out are the significantly bulging wheel arches, especially at the rear, giving the A5 Avant a more robust appearance than its predecessor. Towards the rear, the sideline descends more gently and not as steeply. It also concludes at a more defined spoiler edge, below which now lies the familiar Audi light strip. The tailgate has been designed with more pronounced shapes, and the diffuser appears even more substantial.
Interior
The inside has undergone a complete transformation from what it once was. The previously seen infotainment screen, which appeared almost comically small in comparison images, has been discarded. In its place, there's now an expansive unit that extends toward the center, featuring an OLED-curved display that combines both the instrument cluster (11.9 inches) and infotainment system (14.5 inches) within the dashboard. Moreover, there's an option to add an additional 10.9-inch screen for the passenger.
The image now appears much neater and more refined. While not everyone may appreciate the minimalistic approach to the buttons, it significantly soothes the atmosphere. The cup holders have been realigned to be parallel with the gear selection levels. Even the classic, sporty "three-spoke" design of the steering wheel has been replaced by a more trapezoidal shape.
The extra inches have evidently been devoted to enhanced technology and the comfort of traveling passengers. Even with a tinting panoramic roof, there’s plenty of space both in front and above. As a result, the luggage capacity in the A4 Avant has been reduced from 495 to 1,495 liters to a slightly smaller 476 to 1,424 liters in the A5 Avant. This means there’s room for one less golf club in the future. Hopefully, passengers can cope with this change.
Powertrains and Engines
Currently, the A4 Avant offers a selection of three gasoline engines and two diesel engines. The lineup includes a 2.0-liter TFSI engine available in three different horsepower outputs: 150, 204, and 265. For diesel options, there's a 2.0-liter TDI engine that comes in either 136 horsepower or 204 horsepower. All of these engines are equipped with a 12-volt mild hybrid system that features a belt-driven starter-generator and a lithium-ion battery.
The A5 Avant will offer a selection of three gasoline engines and one diesel option. The gasoline range includes a 2.0-liter TFSI producing 150 horsepower, another 2.0-liter TFSI delivering 204 horsepower, and a 3.0-liter TFSI V6 that offers 367 horsepower. The diesel model will be powered by a 2.0-liter TDI engine, also with 204 horsepower. This system incorporates a 48-volt lithium iron phosphate battery with a capacity of 1.8 kWh, a belt-driven starter-generator, and a new drive train generator that is positioned directly on the transmission's output shaft.
Fancy some competition?
Costs
Currently, the starting price to own an A4 Avant is 43,450 Euros for the 2.0-liter TFSI gasoline engine delivering 150 horsepower. Its counterpart, the A5, is priced around 46,000 Euros and is expected to hit the market in November 2024. The price difference might seem justifiable when considering the distinct differences in the cockpit designs of the two models, a view you can appreciate every day. It's likely that the sense of tranquility this brings will be worth it.
