Shift in the MotoGP Calendar: India’s 2024 Race Cancelled, Kazakhstan Steps In, with India’s Return Set for March 2025
Announcement: The 2024 Indian MotoGP race has been called off, with plans to hold it in March 2025 – Kazakhstan's participation is assured.
The Indian MotoGP scheduled for this year has been officially called off, however, plans are in place for its comeback in March 2025.
As speculated, Kazakhstan is set to replace India in the 2024 calendar lineup.
The inaugural MotoGP event at the Sokol International Racetrack, initially scheduled for June 14-16, was delayed because of regional flooding.
The promoter of the Indian MotoGP has assured that the event will definitely proceed as planned, despite earlier claims suggesting that the race, scheduled for September 20-22, faced cancellation and potential replacement by a race in Kazakhstan.
"Every agreement will be fulfilled by June," stated Pushkar Nath Srivastava, the CEO of Fairstreet, the co-promoter of Indian MotoGP, seemingly indicating payments delayed from the previous year's event.
The need to delay settling its financial commitments until June was attributed to limitations on the use of public funds amidst India's General Election.
However, MotoGP will not be delaying for such an extended period.
An announcement made on Wednesday indicated that this year's event in India has been canceled due to 'operational considerations', which seems to be a reference to the weather conditions. The weather patterns in September were clearly established following the previous year's first event, which experienced temperatures of 33°C in the air, 65% humidity, and track temperatures reaching 39°C.
The International Motorcycling Federation (FIM), the International Road-Racing Teams Association (IRTA), and Dorna Sports have declared that the MotoGP event scheduled for India in 2024 has been delayed. The premier motorcycle racing series is now expected to make its comeback to the nation at the beginning of 2025,
"Based on recommendations from the Uttar Pradesh Government, in line with its ongoing dedication to MotoGP, the racing event is set to make a comeback at the Buddh International Circuit in March 2025. This timing is chosen for its favorable weather, ensuring a comfortable experience for both the audience and the competitors."
An indication for March positions India as potentially being the second event in the 2025 world championship series, following Qatar, which offers a significant amount to secure its spot as the first race of the season.
