Rivian Accelerates Electric Hatchback Race: R3X to Launch Before R3, CEO Confirms

Rivian's leader RJ Scaringe mentioned to The Verge in a recent discussion that the electric hatchback R3X will be launched prior to the standard R3 model, and they're working to get it on the market as quickly as they can.

Scaringe didn't specify a precise date but mentioned that the release of the R3 will happen "as quickly as we can manage" following the debut of the Rivian R2, set to begin manufacturing at the company's Illinois facility in 2026. He also noted that the initial model to hit the market will be the R3X, which is the high-performance version.

Scaringe mentioned, "What I can tell you is that the initial R3 model we are introducing will begin with the R3X variant."

At the launch event for the R2 in March, Rivian introduced two new models, the R3 and R3X. These hatchbacks are designed to be more compact than the R2, with an overall length reduction of approximately 15 inches compared to the SUV. They also rank smaller than Rivian's existing R1S SUV and R1T truck. Furthermore, Rivian aims to price the entry-level R3 model at under $45,000, which is lower than the starting price of the R2, while the R3X is expected to command a higher price point.

Rivian's Third Model

The R3 series is set to have a lot in common with the R2, such as the options for one, two, or three electric motors, the batteries they'll use, and their basic framework. However, the buzz created by the R3 vehicles at their debut suggests their smaller size may inject new life into the dormant compact car market in America, particularly for electric vehicles.

The automotive conglomerate Volkswagen Group plans to allocate as much as $5 billion into Rivian through a partnership that permits Volkswagen to utilize the American car manufacturer's electric framework and technological programs. This investment will also supply Rivian with the necessary capital to advance the development and manufacturing of their R2 and R3 vehicles.
