Jorge Martin Weighs In on Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez’s Controversial Aragon MotoGP Crash
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident at the Aragon MotoGP that involved his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez.
Jorge Martin’s chances at the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, as Francesco Bagnaia experienced a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of scoring points, while Martin consistently secured second place in both races, making it six consecutive second-place finishes for him since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a shaky start, Bagnaia was making his way up the ranks and reached the back of Marquez's bike with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this mistake, leading to a collision between the two riders, resulting in a crash at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to fully commit to one stance or another.
"It's tough," Martin mentioned. "You ought to question Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it was hard to see clearly due to the amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate, Marcos Ramirez. Eventually, this led to contact."
"I hope they're all right, as they appeared to be near the motorcycles after the accident. I wish for their well-being in the upcoming race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian did mention experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will have just one week to recover after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
While Bagnaia has claimed victory at Misano on two occasions in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who clinched both wins in 2023. This year, the Spaniard heads into his opponent's home race with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
