Jorge Martin Weighs In on Controversial Bagnaia-Marquez Crash at Aragon MotoGP, Eyes Championship Lead Ahead of Misano
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship improved significantly during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, as he maintained his remarkable consistency, whereas Francesco Bagnaia experienced a crash.
Martin entered Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following Bagnaia's wins in both the Sprint race and the Grand Prix in Austria.
However, Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin secured two more second-place finishes, continuing his streak of placing second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a slow start, Bagnaia made his way through the pack and caught up to Marquez with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. When Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this mistake, they collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, but it was evident that he was hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin commented. "You should inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it was hard to see clearly because there was a lot of dust in that area. I believe that Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what happened to Joe Roberts in Moto2, where Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, this led to a collision."
"Let's hope they're alright. It looked like they were near the bikes after the crash, so I really hope they can participate in the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is set to take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Bagnaia participated in this race in 2023 while nursing a leg injury sustained from a crash in the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will once again have just one week to recover after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
While Bagnaia has clinched victory at Misano twice in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who secured both wins in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider enters his competitor's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
