Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon MotoGP Collision Amid Championship Surge
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin’s chances of winning the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his ongoing impressive performance and Francesco Bagnaia's crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings. This gap widened after Bagnaia secured wins in both the Sprint and the Grand Prix in Austria.
Bagnaia had a rough weekend in terms of points, which coincided with Martin securing two more second-place finishes, maintaining his streak of coming in second in every race since the summer break.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend concluded with a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. Following a disappointing start, Bagnaia made his way up the field and caught up to Marquez's rear wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. While Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this mistake, the two collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's tough," Martin commented. "You should inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it was hard to see clearly because there was a lot of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2. Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez, and ultimately, there was contact."
"I really hope they're alright. It looked like they were near the bikes after the crash, so I'm wishing they're in good shape for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, will take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury he sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year, he will have just one week to recover after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
While Bagnaia has secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, Martin managed to claim both race wins in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider enters his competitor's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
