Charging into Law Enforcement: The All-Electric 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona Eyes Police Fleet Duty
Is the Electric 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona Gearing Up for Law Enforcement Use?
The current gas-powered Dodge Charger sedan is a common sight in police motor pools, but it's uncertain if the upcoming electric version will also serve on the force.
A recent update on Dodge Law's official Instagram, the account dedicated to Stellantis's police vehicle division, reveals the latest Charger model dressed in police attire. The post describes the vehicle as a prototype and mentions that further information will be released shortly.
Instagram update by Dodge Law, dated August 2024.
The social media post leaves out details on whether the vehicle shown is the electric Charger Daytona or its gas-powered counterpart with a turbocharged inline-6 engine. However, the design of the police logo on the hood suggests that the police prototype features the unique R-Wing front blade characteristic of the electric model.
The Charger Daytona will come in both a three-door and a five-door hatchback version, with the five-door variant featuring additional rear space for holding prisoners. It is equipped with a 100.5-kwh battery, of which 93.5-kwh is usable, and it can travel up to 317 miles on a single charge in the versions designed for the general public. The vehicle can reach a fast-charge speed peak of 183 kw, meaning it can go from a 20% to 80% charge in roughly 28 minutes. The Fratzonic exhaust system, which creates a sound and vibration similar to the discontinued V-8 engine, may not be as significant for police use.
Upcoming 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona Model
Stellantis is set to introduce the United States to its inaugural fully electric police vehicle, joining the ranks of other electric vehicles (EVs) like the Ford F-150 Lightning and Chevrolet Blazer EV that have been modified for police use. South Pasadena in California boasts what it says is the first entirely electric police vehicle fleet in the country, though such cases are rare. The uptake of EVs among American law enforcement has been sluggish, partly because there haven't been many appropriate choices available.
Given that the previous Charger model was a favorite among police departments, it's possible that the new Charger Daytona's electric design will be more appealing for police use and encourage more law enforcement agencies to switch to electric vehicles. Meanwhile, the consumer version of the Charger Daytona is set to arrive at car dealerships later this year, starting at a price of $61,590.
