California’s Irvine Police Department to Deploy Tesla Cybertruck for Patrol Duty
California law enforcement to deploy Tesla Cybertruck
While we're not at the point of needing RoboCop just yet, California will shortly see its inaugural police Cybertruck hit the streets.
Electrek initially noticed that the Irvine Police Department shared on X (previously known as Twitter) this week that they are expecting to receive a Cybertruck shortly. Although no additional information was revealed, Electrek points out that the photo shared suggests the vehicle resembles the one featured in advertising content for UP.FIT, which is a branch of Tesla modification company Unplugged Performance.
The Irvine Police Department is excited to announce the arrival of the Cybertruck to our fleet. Seriously, it's not a joke! Keep an eye out for this Tesla model patrolling the streets of Irvine and Orange County. Decked out with Whelen lights, it's sure to be a standout on your Instagram feed. Last month, UP.FIT introduced a Cybertruck model designed for law enforcement, noting that various police forces and organizations had shown enthusiasm for the vehicle. They also announced that these agencies could expect to receive their vehicles before the year ends.
UP.FIT announced that their truck can be outfitted with standard law enforcement gear, such as communication devices including radios, dividers for detainees, weapon and gear storage, and compartments for police dogs. They also provide upgraded suspension and braking systems, along with a package designed for off-road use.
The Up.Fit Version of the Upcoming Tesla Cybertruck for Police Use
UP.FIT provides a modification service for existing vehicles, but Ford revealed its own electric police truck variant derived from the F-150 Lightning in 2022, available via the company's Special Service Vehicle (SSV) customization scheme. Previously in 2021, the car manufacturer, known for its dominance in the police vehicle sector, unveiled a prototype police version of the Mustang Mach-E. Following this, it was made public that the New York Police Department had shown enthusiasm for incorporating the Mach-E into their fleet of police vehicles.
However, aside from minor trials, law enforcement agencies have generally steered clear of electric vehicles because there haven't been many appropriate choices available, and the expense is a significant barrier, as noted in a 2022 study. The base price for the Cybertruck is $60,990, and that's before any modifications for police use.
