2024 BMW i4 Recall: Chassis Beam Defect May Pose Crash Risk and Fire Hazard
BMW issues a recall for 1,150 of its i4 electric vehicles due to a potential cracking issue in a chassis component that could affect the vehicle's structural stability.
Every vehicle that has been recalled is from the 2024 lineup, covering all three variants of the i4 that are on offer for the said year. This recall affects the entry-level i4 eDrive40 with one motor, the i4 xDrive50 with two motors, and the highest-end model, the i4 M50.

According to a recall notice by the NHTSA, there's a possibility that the left-side longitudinal beam in these vehicles wasn't made according to the required standards by the supplier. The defect is particularly concerning as it could lead to a fracture around a rivet flange that holds up the rear wheel arch. Should an accident occur, this flaw might result in greater bending of the vehicle's frame near the back seating, which in turn could harm the battery pack and raise the chances of a fire, the NHTSA warns.
BMW has no knowledge of any incidents or harm connected to this concern, which came to light during routine quality inspections by the supplier. Additionally, the company has not received any warranty claims or grievances from customers regarding this issue.

Authorized dealers are set to examine the left-hand side support beam and will provide a replacement at no cost if it's deemed essential. BMW intends to initiate the dispatch of letters to vehicle owners on October 7, 2024. Additionally, vehicle owners have the option to reach out to the customer support team of the car manufacturer at the following number: 1-800-525-7417.
Launched in the 2022 lineup, the i4 merges an electric motor with the structure of the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe that traditionally runs on petrol. For 2025, the electric version is getting enhancements, notably an extended driving range in selected models. BMW is shifting its focus to creating electric vehicles on a unique EV platform with its upcoming Neue Klasse series, which is set to debut in Europe in 2025.
