Volvo Gears Up: 2025 EX90 EV Production Rolls Out in U.S. Amidst Software Setbacks
Volvo has commenced the manufacturing process for its 2025 EX90 electric SUV, specifically for the American market, in its Charleston facility in South Carolina, the company announced on Wednesday.
Revealed in November of last year, the initial release of the EX90 was planned for the start of 2024. However, it faced delays because of complications with its software. Volvo has since adjusted its schedule, aiming to distribute the first batch of these vehicles to American customers in the latter part of this year.
The manufacturing of the EX90 takes place at the same South Carolina establishment as the Volvo S60 sedan, which comes in both gasoline and plug-in hybrid variants. This plant, initiated in 2018, marks Volvo's inaugural production site in the United States. With the capability to produce as many as 150,000 vehicles annually, the facility is gearing up to expand its production to include the Polestar 3 electric SUV, a vehicle that utilizes the same base as the EX90, Volvo indicates.
Manufacturing of the 2025 Volvo EX90 starts in South Carolina.
In the United States, the starting price for the EX90 with seating for seven is set at $77,990, and the version featuring six seats with captain's chairs in the second row begins at $78,490, with both figures inclusive of the $1,295 delivery charge. Consequently, it appears that certain models of the vehicle may be priced below the $80,000 threshold for the federal electric vehicle tax credit.
Volvo has announced that there will be two power variants available, each featuring a dual-motor AWD setup. The standard Twin Motor version delivers 402 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque, with the capability of reaching 60 mph from a standstill in 5.7 seconds, as per Volvo's data. For an additional $5,000, buyers can opt for the Twin Motor Performance model, which boosts power to 496 horsepower and 671 pound-feet of torque, shaving the 0-60 mph time down to an estimated 4.7 seconds, according to Volvo's projections.
Volvo has indicated that their 111-kWh battery pack could potentially deliver a driving distance of up to 300 miles, although this has not yet been verified by the EPA. The company has confirmed that every EX90 model sold in the United States will come equipped with a heat pump and the necessary components for two-way charging. When using a DC fast charger, the EX90 can charge at a maximum rate of 250 kW, allowing it to go from a 10% to an 80% charge in roughly half an hour.

South Carolina will be home to more than just the Charleston facility for electric vehicle production. Scout Motors, a new brand under the Volkswagen Group, is set to construct an electric vehicle plant close to Columbia, the state's capital, with the aim to start operations within the next few years. This new venture will focus on creating tough electric vehicles, taking inspiration from the iconic International Harvester Scout, with plans to introduce an SUV priced at around $40,000.
In related news, the upcoming 2025 Volvo EX30 is set to hit U.S. markets, starting at a price of $36,245. However, Volvo's initial strategy to produce the EX30 in China for the American market might face challenges due to the recent tariffs introduced by the Biden administration.
