Volkswagen Charges Ahead with In-Car Gaming for EV Drivers in Europe
Volkswagen's electric vehicles in Europe are set to offer video gaming options to drivers during charging sessions.
On Monday, the car manufacturer revealed plans to integrate the AirConsole gaming system into select models for a few European markets from mid-September onwards. Volkswagen aims to roll out the feature across additional European nations by late 2024 or early 2025, though no details were provided regarding a release in the American market.

AirConsole, also integrated into the BMW i5's system, operates as an application on the car's multimedia interface, utilizing passengers' smartphones to control it. To engage this function, which offers both solo and group play modes, the car must be stationary.
The interactive gaming option is rolling out on the VW ID.7 Tourer, which is the estate variant of the ID.7 hatchback. This particular model was not designed with the U.S. market in mind, despite the original hatchback model being slated for a later release in the year as a 2025 model. However, in May, VW postponed the launch of the ID.7 for the American market and has yet to announce a new schedule for its debut.

Volkswagen is set to introduce in-car gaming options not only for the upcoming ID.7 but also for its electric vehicle lineup including ID.5, ID.4, and ID.3 models, although only the ID.4 is available for purchase in the United States. This feature will also be available in their traditional fuel-powered models such as the Golf, Passat, and Tiguan.
Volkswagen has not disclosed any intentions to introduce AirConsole gaming into the ID.Buzz electric van, which is anticipated to be available at American dealerships before the year's end, starting at a price of $61,545, and capable of covering a distance of up to 234 miles according to EPA estimates (note that these figures do not pertain to the same model). Although the ID.Buzz is available as a commercial vehicle in Europe, it is sold only as a three-row passenger van in the United States, which could potentially be an ideal setup for integrated gaming services.
