Verstappen Unfazed by ‘Loose’ Red Bull in Spanish GP Practice: Team Experiments with Setups
Max Verstappen discusses his recent comments about Red Bull's radio issues during practice at the Spanish Grand Prix
Max Verstappen shares his thoughts on his Friday performance at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen appeared relatively unfazed by his Red Bull F1 vehicle exhibiting a "loose" sensation during Friday's practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix, clarifying that they were merely experimenting with different vehicle configurations.
Verstappen was caught voicing his frustrations through the team radio multiple times, mentioning that his car felt unstable.
He communicated via the first radio transmission, stating, "The vehicle tends to oversteer when exiting turns overall, also experiencing an odd understeer in the middle of corners; this vehicle lacks grip…"
Shortly afterward, he stated: "The car is still not stable… I require the alternative wing."
It quickly became apparent that Red Bull was experimenting with various rear wing setups until the end of the second free practice session.
The driver from the Netherlands finished in fifth place, more than 0.2 seconds behind Lewis Hamilton's leading time.
Fascinatingly, Verstappen led the way in both the initial and concluding sectors, yet he fell behind during the middle segment of the lap.
Addressing his “vague” grievances, Verstappen explained: “We experimented with various setups during FP1 and FP2. We were essentially aiming to refine it slightly. Thankfully, the day went more smoothly without any problems, which is what we were aiming for.
"Now, the focus is on making some minor adjustments to the car. This is a typical step."
In response to inquiries about the updates made to Red Bull, he noted, "They were quite minimal. Nothing significant. Up to this point, everything seems standard."
Red Bull's Sergio Perez had a challenging day, finishing 13th in the standings.
Perez has been experiencing a challenging streak, failing to finish in consecutive races, and his prospects for a positive outcome this weekend are further hampered by a three-position grid penalty carried over from the previous race.
Perez shared his experiences of the day in Spain, stating, "The day began positively, but as we moved into FP2 and made a number of adjustments, we somehow lost our way. There's a lot to go over."
"We made numerous modifications and thoroughly investigated the car. We're optimistic about selecting the appropriate adjustments for tomorrow."
