Hamilton Clinches Top Spot in Thrilling Spanish GP Second Practice, Sainz and Norris Close Behind
Lewis Hamilton showcases his Mercedes' speed, leading the way in the Friday practice session in Barcelona, concluding ahead of Carlos Sainz.
Lewis Hamilton narrowly surpassed Carlos Sainz to lead the highly competitive second practice session at the F1 Spanish Grand Prix.
The seven-time world champion demonstrated impressive speed in his Mercedes on the soft tyre laps, clocking the quickest time at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya on Friday, with a time of 1 minute and 13.264 seconds.
Hamilton secured the fastest time, edging out Ferrari's Sainz by a mere 0.022 seconds, while Lando Norris, who led the first practice session, was closely behind, just 0.055 seconds off the pace, placing third in his McLaren.
In a surprising turn of events, Pierre Gasly secured the fourth position for Alpine, trailing Hamilton's fastest time in the second practice session by only 0.179 seconds
Current world titleholder Max Verstappen secured the fifth quickest time, lagging by 0.240 seconds, voicing his concerns over the RB20's control and stability.
Charles Leclerc secured the sixth position driving the second Ferrari, followed by Oscar Piastri from McLaren, George Russell of Mercedes, Esteban Ocon in the Alpine, and Valtteri Bottas rounding out the top 10 for Sauber.
Heading into the Barcelona race weekend with a three-place grid penalty and facing difficulties due to a dip in performance, Sergio Perez placed 13th in the speed rankings on soft tyres – trailing his Red Bull teammate Verstappen by more than half a second.
The leading 16 crossed the finish line within one second of Hamilton's chart-leading speed.
