Toto Wolff’s ‘Mischief’ Tactics to Rattle Red Bull and the Future of Mercedes: Brundle vs. Rosberg on George Russell’s Position
Toto Wolff faces accusations of causing trouble to annoy Red Bull while pursuing Max Verstappen
Martin Brundle's opinion on if George Russell should be concerned
According to Martin Brundle, Toto Wolff's overt interest in Max Verstappen is primarily a tactic meant to irritate Red Bull.
The head of Mercedes confidently revealed that Kimi Antonelli will take over Lewis Hamilton's spot and join George Russell in their 2025 team.
However, he also expressed his continuous interest in luring Verstappen from Red Bull to join Mercedes in 2026.
The upcoming F1 regulations set to take effect in 2026 might give Mercedes a chance to launch a new period of supremacy, provided they develop the most powerful engine. This could make them a highly desirable team for all drivers, Verstappen included.
However, according to Brundle from Sky Sports, "Toto's actions are aimed at both unsettling Red Bull and strengthening Mercedes."
"When he made that statement, George was on one side of him, and Antonelli was on the other!"
"They also handle the careers of those two drivers."
"George is the primary driver for the esteemed Mercedes team as they enter a season where the car appears to have significant potential."
"He has everything within his grasp. There’s no need for him to worry about the competition behind him."
Brundle has a different perspective compared to Nico Rosberg, who anticipates a fierce competition among Mercedes drivers next season to secure their positions.
Rosberg forecasted that it would ultimately be a direct contest between Antonelli and George.
"George is likely to find himself in a challenging situation. With an 18-year-old rising star in the mix, expectations are high. George is anticipated to defeat Antonelli, which puts him in a position where failure is almost the only outcome next year."
"It's a difficult situation; he needs to outperform Antonelli to secure his position next to Verstappen."
