George Russell Dominates Final Baku Practice as Oliver Bearman’s Crash Adds Drama
George Russell leads the final practice session in Baku while Oliver Bearman has an accident. According to Lewis Larkam, the competition for pole position is highly competitive.
In an eventful last practice session at the F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, George Russell led the times for Mercedes, while Oliver Bearman had an incident, crashing his Haas.
Although Russell had expressed concerns about a "terrible" ride and potential engine issues, he unexpectedly recorded the quickest time in the closing moments of FP3, narrowly beating Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by a mere 0.013 seconds.
Lando Norris posted the third-fastest time, trailing Russell by 0.223 seconds and narrowly edging out his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri.
Current world champion Max Verstappen, who is ahead of his title competitor Norris by 62 points going into the weekend, finished fifth, trailing Russell's leading time by 0.348 seconds.
Carlos Sainz from Ferrari secured the sixth position, outperforming Sergio Perez of Red Bull, who finished seventh. The Williams team saw impressive performances from Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto, who managed to claim the eighth and ninth spots, respectively.
Lewis Hamilton finished in tenth place, trailing his Mercedes teammate by nearly eight-tenths of a second.
The fight for the top spot seems too tight to predict as we approach Saturday's qualifying, with Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren all displaying potential to be contenders.
The third practice session had to be stopped twice due to red flags: the initial interruption occurred when Esteban Ocon from Alpine experienced an unknown problem and his car came to a stop on the track.
In only his second Formula 1 race weekend as a substitute for the suspended regular Haas driver Kevin Magnussen, British teenager Bearman caused a second red flag after crashing into the barriers at Turn 1.
