Stellantis CEO Announces $25,000 Jeep EV Heading to U.S. Market
Stellantis' chief executive Carlos Tavares announced at a recent Bernstein investor conference, as reported by CNBC and other news outlets, that an electric Jeep valued at $25,000 will be hitting the American market in the near future.
Tavares stated at the event, which took place before the recent unveiling of the Wagoneer S, that a reasonably priced battery electric vehicle (BEV) would cost about 20,000 euros in Europe and $25,000 in the United States. He emphasized their commitment to delivering a secure, eco-friendly, and cost-effective BEV to the American market at the $25,000 price point, affirming, "We'll achieve this."
Stellantis is currently offering the Citroën e-C3, priced at 20,000 euros, in Europe, according to Tavares. He emphasized that the company is applying the same know-how utilized in launching that electric vehicle to bring a Jeep to the U.S. market at a similar price point.
Jeep's New
Stellantis offers a fully electric model of the Jeep Avenger in the European market, with a price tag of approximately 35,000 euros, equivalent to around $37,800, as reported by CNBC. The company has decided against introducing the Avenger, a model that is more compact than any they currently have on offer in the U.S. market, to this region. Furthermore, there is talk of increasing the number of traditional gasoline-powered models on sale in Europe beyond initial projections.
So far, Jeep's attention in the U.S. has been on plug-in hybrid vehicles. Their Wrangler 4xe model has topped sales charts as the most popular plug-in hybrid, with the Grand Cherokee 4xe also performing well, as restated by Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa this week. Additionally, Jeep has announced the introduction of a new 4xe plug-in hybrid version of their Gladiator pickup truck.
The starting cost for the upcoming Wagoneer S EV is set to exceed $70,000. The vehicle expected to come after it is the Recon, reminiscent of the Wrangler. Initially revealed as an exclusively electric vehicle, there's now talk that it might also offer a hybrid engine alternative.
Upcoming 2024 Model of Jeep Wagone
In the latter part of 2021, Tavares expressed that the production costs for electric vehicles were 50% higher compared to traditional gasoline-powered cars. He described this cost discrepancy as exceeding what the industry could maintain, emphasizing that the additional expense was too substantial to be transferred to the consumers.
The looming danger of low-cost electric vehicles from China is now materializing in the European market, while currently, only trade regulations are holding it back in the United States, especially after the recent increase in tariffs by the Biden administration.
