Analysis: The latest Rivian R1T and R1S models see improvements in energy use, coziness, and sustainability

Rivian has revamped the power units, propulsion systems, and chassis of its R1T and R1S vehicles.

In 2021, the R1 series of vehicles will be equipped with their inaugural lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries.

The overhaul could result in the R1 models sharing more similarities with the forthcoming R2 series from Rivian.

This week in Seattle, Rivian unveiled its updated R1 series, promising to enhance the brand's journey-forward approach with improved efficiency and comfort.

With the iconic Space Needle serving as a backdrop, I took a series of updated vehicles from the range for a spin, clearly seeing improvements across the board. At the same time, Rivian is carefully balancing the desires of current R1 and upscale electric vehicle owners, the necessity for compatibility with the highly awaited R2 series, and the essential requirements for its own survival as a standalone automaker in the U.S.

On the surface, one might mistake the Rivian R1S electric SUV and the Rivian R1T electric pickup for their earlier versions due to their exterior design and silhouette. However, a closer inspection reveals that almost every part and technological feature has undergone improvements. This includes modifications to the vehicle's frame beneath the exterior for more efficient manufacturing and reduction in weight.

During a recent visit with the Rivian team in Seattle, Green Car Reports gained insight into Rivian's methodical approach to addressing feedback. They meticulously rectified almost every aspect that early users suggested for improvement, and introduced a range of ingenious features likely to attract new customers.

The upcoming 2025 models of Rivian's R1T and R1S will be available with a choice of battery sizes including Standard, Large, and Max options. Additionally, buyers can select from configurations featuring two, three, or four motors.

The previous summer saw the introduction of Dual-Motor models featuring Rivian's latest motors, which are also utilized in EDV vehicles. The R1 series is phasing out the older Quad-Motor configuration and introducing two different sizes of dual-motor modules that integrate Rivian's proprietary oil-cooled motors.

The manufacturing process for these engines is optimized for mass production, and there are indications that they could enable the firm to focus more on their compact R2 series. All the models feature identical coils and magnet components, along with in-house developed inverter technology utilized in both the front and rear. Rivian maintains a strategy that prioritizes the use of front engines for energy-saving purposes, whereas the rear engines are geared towards enhancing the vehicle's power and have the capability to be disengaged.

Rivian reveals that their newly introduced Tri-Motor vehicles are faster than the earlier Quad-Motor lineup. The Quad-Motor variants consist of two sets of motors, featuring smaller ones at the front, collectively producing 1,025 horsepower and a torque of 1,198 pound-feet during launch control, allowing these models to go from 0 to 60 mph in under 2.5 seconds, as per Rivian's statements. In comparison, the Tri-Motor models generate 850 horsepower and 1,103 pound-feet of torque using a combination of two rear motors and a single front motor, achieving the 0-60 mph sprint in 2.9 seconds. The Dual-Motor lineup is divided into standard and performance editions, with the standard edition offering 533 horsepower and 610 pound-feet of torque, resulting in a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds, and the performance edition providing 665 horsepower and 829 pound-feet of torque, capable of reaching 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds.

Externally, these variants present minimal differences. The Quad-Motor versions introduce Laguna Blue as the fresh color choice for their brake calipers, accompanied by a subtle "QUAD" emblem centered on the rear badge. In contrast, the Tri-Motor versions showcase yellow calipers and feature a yellow stripe on the rear badge.

The three- and four-motor configurations are designed such that the motors at the rear provide an additional boost, boasting a higher reduction ratio of 11.7:1 at the back compared to 9.1:1 at the front. During my time testing the launch control on a four-motor version at a drag racing track, I found that these vehicles are capable of a rapid acceleration from a complete stop and maintain near-maximum power up to a greater speed than previous models.

Rivian employs a complex algorithm for controlling torque distribution that adjusts based on the selected driving mode. The dual-motor setups found in the rear of the three-motor variants and positioned at both front and rear in the four-motor versions operate independently, with each motor responsible for rotating its corresponding set of wheels. For the front wheels, both Dual-Motor and Tri-Motor configurations utilize a single motor system in conjunction with a differential and the application of brake torque. Regardless of the specific setup, the R1 series has the capability to engage or disengage the motors linked to either the front or rear axle to optimize either traction or fuel efficiency. In general, the R1 prioritizes power to the front wheels during gentle acceleration and most cruising scenarios. However, it shifts more power to the rear motors as necessary, particularly when greater acceleration is required.

The maximum towing capacities for the R1T and R1S remain unchanged at 11,000 pounds and 7,700 pounds, in that order.

The R1S and R1T models will now feature an LFP Standard Pack, with an enhanced design that prioritizes reduced weight, easier production, and affordability. Despite these changes, the fundamental design, which includes a flat cooling plate within the Large and Max Packs, remains the same. The Standard Pack offers a useful capacity of 92.5 kWh, the Large Pack holds 109.4 kWh, and the Max Packs maintain their original capacity of 141.5 kWh.

Indeed, the battery capacities for the Standard and Large packs in the upcoming models are less compared to the 2024 versions. However, Rivian has made significant efficiency enhancements, resulting in a starting range of 258 EPA miles. Even the Standard Pack models are anticipated to achieve 270 miles, matching the range of the first generation's 106-kWh Standard Pack, highlighting the substantial efficiency gains. While range estimates have not been finalized, projections suggest a maximum of 420 miles for the Dual-Motor R1T with the Max Pack and up to 410 miles for the Dual-Motor R1S equipped with the Max Pack. Rivian proclaims that the new R1T will set the bar for truck efficiency, and there is keen interest in witnessing its performance under normal driving conditions.

The selection of aerodynamically optimized wheels within the range now includes 22-inch options, surpassing the previous 21-inch versions. This upgrade contributes to an impressively low drag coefficient, which can drop to 0.297, thereby enhancing the vehicle's range.

The heat pump has finally arrived for the entire R1 series. This addition increases the average driving distance by about 10 miles, with even greater gains in certain conditions. Rivian has chosen to replace the traditional resistive heating mechanism with a component that warms the coolant as required and retains the heat effectively within the system.

Additionally, by combining all these enhancements in productivity and production processes, the report indicates that the R1's carbon emissions have been reduced by 15%.

The bigger-sized Large Pack and Max Pack options continue to use the 2170-format cylindrical batteries with the same NCA (nickel cobalt aluminum) composition, but they benefit from an approximately 6% increase in energy capacity. The much-anticipated LFP batteries employ sizable, flat pouch batteries that are stacked to match the height of the double-layer cylindrical batteries, while incorporating a completely distinct method for internal cooling. According to information provided to Green Car Reports by officials, these LFP batteries have just slightly less energy capacity compared to the NCA batteries, but Rivian has yet to disclose the identity of the battery provider.

First-generation battery pack from Rivian

Rivian has introduced an updated design for its battery packs, streamlining the previous version by reducing both weight and intricacy. The battery casing is now created through a high-pressure die-casting process rather than extrusion, resulting in greater precision and shedding 55 pounds in weight. Overall, the new battery pack assembly achieves a total weight reduction of 154 pounds and features a unified component that integrates the battery management system.

The second-generation model doesn't deliver the anticipated upgrade to 800 volts

Contrary to previous implications made by Rivian, the updated Gen 2 does not transition to an 800-volt system, something that CEO RJ Scaringe had indicated might happen with the initial major update. Although there have been suggestions that the R1 series could support bidirectional charging, Rivian representatives have been reluctant to disclose specifics on its potential integration or timeline.

The process of recharging electric vehicles hasn't seen significant advancements. Rivian has modified the charging profile to be more consistent over time, yet the maximum charging rate for the larger battery options is still capped at 220 kilowatts. The Standard Pack, which uses LFP cells, tops out at 200 kilowatts. According to Rivian, a rapid charge from 10% to 80% battery capacity can be completed in 30 to 41 minutes, varying by battery type. The vehicles can also gain approximately 140 miles of driving range in around 20 minutes. For Level 2 charging, the maximum power input remains at 48 amps, equivalent to 11.5 kilowatts, which may not be sufficient to fully charge the largest battery option overnight.

The company has made significant improvements to the R1's electrical system, making it more streamlined and addressing the problem of energy being drained when not in use. They've enhanced its efficiency and made the production process more straightforward. The electrical design has been overhauled, now featuring only 7 ECUs instead of the former 17, and eliminating 1.6 miles worth of cables from the car. Moreover, they've incorporated a new mini DC-DC converter which maintains the 12-volt battery's charge more consistently and supplies energy to low-power features such as the entertainment system and lighting.

Nature enthusiasts rely on their vehicle's battery life being just as full as when they departed, and Rivian now boasts the best-in-class figures for battery range retention—this is when the Gear Guard feature is switched off, given that it operates with cameras and computing equipment.

R1 illumination collaborates with you

Rivian has maintained the original design and the vehicle's iconic light pattern. They've actually enhanced its distinctiveness by incorporating active-matrix headlights that include adaptive-beam technology, which Rivian plans to activate later in the year. Initially, the lights will feature an adaptive cornering capability, while the adaptive high beam is in the last phase of approval and will become operational through an upcoming software upgrade.

The revamped frontal lightbar is now fully functional, with 10 separate RGB lighting segments capable of displaying practically any hue. One of its first applications is to visually indicate the battery's charge level as a percentage. As suggested by a company official, the combination of the updated headlights and the RGB lightbar opens up numerous possibilities for hidden features.

Jeff Hammoud, who leads design at Rivian, described the updates as bringing a greater sense of depth to the overall look of the lighting. "The design remains uniquely identifiable as Rivian. We're quite fond of the vehicle's 'face,'" Hammoud remarked. "Creating a design that's straightforward, easy to convey, and stands out is quite challenging, and we're pleased with what we have. We have no intention of abandoning it."

The R1 series now features an innovative glass roof that can be tinted as desired, along with a versatile interior lighting system that offers a range of colors.

Rivian has streamlined its user interface to enhance user-friendliness, and to improve the graphics within the system, Rivian collaborated with Epic Games utilizing their Unreal Engine. Despite its eye-catching graphics, it continues to be one of the most user-friendly interfaces available, particularly for users looking to monitor their vehicle's systems.

In addition to the user interface, this reporter was impressed by the updated electronic door openers that operate with the push of a button – a nice high-end feature, though a manual option is still available for those who prefer it. The cabin's refreshed materials and finishes also caught my eye, particularly the checkered, quilt-patterned seating and floor coverings.

Updated R1 Series from Rivian: Enhanced Luxury Experience

The interior of the R1 series now exudes a higher sense of luxury, not so much due to the features it offers, but rather through the improved ride quality and handling it delivers.

At that juncture, as soon as the Gen 2 is in motion—even when maneuvering through urban roads—it becomes immediately apparent. Rivian has successfully eliminated the harsh, occasionally loud driving experience in these models by opting for a gentler calibration throughout the range, which maintains the steering precision and, likely, enhances it when the terrain becomes challenging.

The company made adjustments by enhancing the stiffness of the front springs and reducing the stiffness at the rear, followed by introducing a revised damper setting and fresh bushings. Although all models continue to utilize air springs, the revamped tuning is intended to more effectively accommodate the weight distribution and power output tendencies toward the back of these vehicles.

The integration of the suspension system is enhanced with the new Rally and Drift modes exclusive to the Tri-Motor models. While navigating a muddy terrain designed to test the R1S's handling, I noticed a significant distinction between the modes, primarily due to the varied settings programmed into the hydraulic roll control.

I had the chance to drive the R1T on a challenging off-road track, which really put its wheel flexibility and trail capabilities to the test. The maximum ground clearance for the R1T is 14.6 inches, while the R1S slightly exceeds that at 14.7 inches. During our drive, the water level reached the light bar of our R1T, but it wasn't a problem. With the capability to traverse up to 43 inches of water, the R1 trucks easily handled the combination of heavy rain and high water without issue.

Rivian R1 enhancements: Integrated audio-visual technology

Rivian has made significant improvements to its detection and pilot-assist technologies. Dubbed the Rivian Autonomy Platform, the system integrates 11 cameras, five radar sensors, and advanced AI algorithms to achieve a 350-degree field of view with camera resolution eight times sharper than previous models. This boost enhances the vehicle's performance in poor weather and low-light conditions. The standard package of this technology will come with features such as blind-spot detection and a combination of lane-keeping and adaptive speed control. An upgraded "plus" variant will initially introduce driver-activated lane switching and, eventually, a more sophisticated iteration that has yet to be unveiled.

Rivian is introducing a high-end audio setup featuring Dolby Atmos, and it's set to debut with built-in Apple Music and its Spatial Audio feature. For a monthly fee of $14.99, Rivian Connect+ subscribers can enjoy Apple Music, use their vehicle as a wifi hotspot, and more. Plus, the in-car display now supports streaming video (and audio) content via Google Cast, which is particularly handy during recharging breaks. However, it's important to note that the system doesn't support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, so you won't have a seamless integration of your smartphone's capabilities in the car.

iPhone or Apple Watch users, as well as certain Google Pixel users, have the capability to unlock their Rivian vehicles using the Apple Wallet feature. Additionally, they can share their car keys with relatives or friends, or even grant a temporary one-day access to their car.

2025 Range of Rivian R1 Models

Starting this Friday, June 7, Rivian will begin shipping out the latest models of their second-generation R1 series. The 2025 Rivian R1T pickup is priced from $71,700, which includes a $1,800 delivery fee, while the R1S SUV starts at $77,700. The most expensive options currently available are the Tri-Motor Max Pack variants, with the R1T priced at $101,700 and the R1S at $107,700. Pricing details for the Quad-Motor Max Pack editions have not been released yet and are expected to be available shortly after. Rivian has two finishes on offer, Adventure and Ascend, with specifics on their differences yet to be disclosed. The Dual-Motor and high-performance Dual-Motor versions will come exclusively in the Adventure finish, while the more powerful Tri-Motor and Quad-Motor versions will be available only in the Ascend finish.

As Rivian progresses towards the concluding phases of its R2 series development, the stakes are high for the company's future. The expectation is that the R2 will borrow the R1's propulsion technology among other features, while also aiming to break new ground in terms of cost-effectiveness for the average consumer, financial success, and the firm's sustained existence. Observing the current trajectory and the potential enhancements for the R1 line, there's a strong optimism surrounding the company's ability to meet these objectives with flying colors.

To support the review process, Rivian supplied lodging in Seattle and offered a selection of nutritious meals.
