BMW's 1 Series (2024): Introducing the Fresh F70 Generation
BMW has thoroughly revamped its entry-level model. Increased 48V technology yet scaled-back horsepower
At first glance, the latest BMW 1 Series may seem like an extensive update to the existing version. However, BMW is touting it as a completely new vehicle, dubbed the "fourth generation," and has even assigned it a fresh internal code: F70. This ensures the brand's compact series will continue to thrive. Unlike the Mercedes A-Class …
Exterior
The size of the five-door model has seen minimal changes compared to its predecessor. The latest BMW 1 Series has grown in length by 42 millimeters, reaching a total of 4,361 millimeters, with a wheelbase measuring 2,670 millimeters. The width of the car stands at 1,800 millimeters, while its height has increased by 25 millimeters to 1,459 millimeters.

Upon seeing it in person, one can't help but notice the redesigned front end, which comes across as less imposing than its predecessor's. This is primarily due to the more streamlined grille, which features an innovative pattern of vertical and diagonal bars within. Some might find it reminiscent of the old Aldi Süd emblem, though BMW was probably aiming for an association with the "New Class."
The front end of the latest 1 series model presents a notably low and sloped design toward the road surface. It brings to mind similar aesthetics seen in cars like the Kia Ceed or Mazda 3 for some observers. Standard LED headlights are fitted with vertical components for the daytime running lights and indicators, similar to the style seen on the X1, as well as the post-facelift M3 and the 5 series. The front of the car features a distinctive "New Class crease" at the BMW emblem.
Optional features for the new BMW 1 Series include advanced LED headlights with a high-beam matrix system that prevents glare, cornering lights, and blue highlights. From a side perspective, the latest BMW 1 Series most closely resembles its predecessor. The standard package includes the BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line, which features a graphic element with the number '1' located at the Hofmeister kink on the C-pillar, a detail familiar from the 5 Series sedan.
A lengthy roof spoiler and lateral air guiding features accentuate the elongated profile. The split rear lights extend deeply into the side sections. Regarding the new 1 series rear design, I'd like to make this personal comment: It feels like I've seen something similar somewhere else before. Suggestions are welcome… At least, the view of the ribbed metal of the exhaust system isn't as unpleasant as it used to be.

When it comes to paint options, there are two solid colors and seven metallic shades to choose from. The M-KD 1161 model showcased in the images is presented in a "Cape York Green" hue. For the first time, the latest BMW 1 Series offers the option of a black contrasting paint job for the roof.
Interior
Let's step inside the F70: As always, the 1 Series isn't exceptionally spacious, with the rear seating being adequate but not lavish. Inside the redesigned and standard non-leather interior, newly designed seats aim to provide substantial comfort for long-distance travel.
Customers have the choice to opt for sports seats crafted in Econeer style, featuring covers and cushions made from sustainable, recycled polyester material. Additionally, there are M sports seats available for selection. The lineup also includes seats with perforated surfaces in the Veganza design, which boast leather-like qualities. The combination of Veganza and Alcantara detailing is included in the M Sport package and comes as standard in the BMW M135 xDrive.

By folding down the rear seatback, the trunk capacity can be increased from 380 liters to a maximum of 1,200 liters (for the BMW 120 and BMW 120d: from 300 to 1,135 liters). This feature remains unchanged from the previous model.
The design of the dashboard in the latest model shares similarities with the current 5 series, maintaining a consistent aesthetic across BMW's range. The integrated "Curved Display," a feature increasingly common in BMW vehicles, comprises a pair of screens measuring 10.25 inches and 10.7 inches respectively. This move towards a fully digital interface has allowed for a significant reduction in physical buttons and dials within the driver's area. Similarly, the air conditioning system in the new BMW 1 Series is digitally operated, which means there are very few actual buttons, and, following the example of the X1, there's no rotary push-button control.
Connectivity
While some may find it regrettable, the initial test of the touchscreen controls proved to be effective. The latest version of iDrive with QuickSelect, based on the BMW Operating System 9, is now available in the new 1 Series. It is designed with a focus on touchscreen interaction and voice command functionality. Additionally, the control system includes multifunction steering wheel buttons and the option for a Head-Up Display.

The BMW Group has developed its own BMW Operating System 9, which is founded on an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software base. Its QuickSelect feature allows users to instantly access desired functions without navigating through a submenu. To ensure the latest software updates for the new BMW 1 Series, updates can be installed "over-the-air."

The latest 1 Series comes standard with three settings: Personal Mode, Sport Mode, and Efficient Mode. There's also the option to add three more modes: Expressive Mode, Relax Mode, and Digital Art Mode. Beyond the default lighting choreography, you can choose from three additional patterns: Adagio, Vivace, and Allegro. Between us, we'd prefer some elegant wooden trims which are less distracting at night.
Propulsion Systems
Regardless of staging or illumination, no 1 Series model can move without engines. Just like the power unit in the BMW M135 xDrive, all other engines available for the new BMW 1 Series are derived from the company's latest modular generation.
The latest BMW 120 features a three-cylinder gasoline engine, while the BMW 120d is powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine, both integrated with 48-volt mild-hybrid systems. Standard across the range is a seven-speed Steptronic transmission equipped with a dual-clutch system that delivers power efficiently.
Have you noticed? Indeed, the latest 1 Series has dropped the 'i' suffix on its petrol models, reserving the letter for its electric range. But will there be an i1? It seems unlikely, especially since there's already the iX1, not to mention the new Mini Aceman and the Mini Cooper Electric for those looking for something even smaller.
Turning our attention back to the combustion engines in the latest 1 Series models: The new BMW 120's powertrain delivers a peak output of 125 kW (170 horsepower, previously 178), allowing the car to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds (an increase of 0.8 seconds). The new BMW 120d boasts 120 kW (163 horsepower) and can dash from a standstill to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds (an increase of 0.6 seconds). This means it has 27 horsepower less than its predecessor.
The BMW 118d, also powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine, retains its output of 110 kW (150 horsepower) and improves its acceleration time to 8.3 seconds, a reduction of 0.2 seconds. Two additional models, the 116 with a three-cylinder engine and the 123 xDrive featuring a four-cylinder, are set to debut at the end of 2024.
2024 BMW M135 with All-Wheel Drive
In the M135 xDrive, the power has been slightly reduced to 221 kW (300 horsepower), a decrease of six horsepower from its predecessor. This model boasts M-specific features such as a strengthened crank drive, an improved oil supply system for cooling channel pistons, and newly designed main bearing shells and caps. The peak torque has been reduced to 400 Nm (previously 450) but is accessible from 2,000 to 4,500 RPM. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 4.9 seconds, shaving off 0.2 seconds from the previous time, and the top speed is capped at 250 km/h.
The performance of the vehicle is enhanced by the sound of the M-specific exhaust system, which is also channeled into the cabin and amplified through the speaker system of the sound system. The 135 model is the only one in the series that features visibly positioned exhaust outlets at the rear.
Costs
According to BMW, the latest 1 Series comes standard or can be equipped with a significantly expanded array of systems for automated driving and parking. The enhanced standard features of the new 1 Series also include automatic climate control, an alarm system, electrically foldable exterior mirrors, and the BMW Live Cockpit Plus which incorporates the cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system.
Here are the German prices for the F70 manufactured in Leipzig:
Interestingly, the new 120 model is priced at approximately 3,000 euros less than the previous 120i, but it now comes with a three-cylinder engine. The 118d's price has been reduced by 400 euros, and the 120d sees a more significant price drop of 2,500 euros. On the other hand, the M135 xDrive's price is set to increase by around 1,000 euros.
The rivals of the latest BMW 1 Series:
Shortly after the product launch on October 5, 2024, two new engine options will be added to the production line starting in November 2024.
The price for the BMW 116 starts at 32,900 Euros, with an additional charge of 2,300 Euros. Meanwhile, the BMW 123 xDrive is available for
