Ram’s Innovative Step: The Dual-Purpose Deployable Rear Step and Diffuser Aiming to Boost Electric Truck Efficiency
Ram is considering transforming the standard bed step into a dynamic aerodynamic element that might enhance the mileage of its upcoming electric pickups.
Stellantis, the corporate owner of Ram, has submitted a request for legal protection of its innovative design for a retractable step at the back of the vehicle that also functions as a dynamic airflow regulator. The submission to the US Patent and Trademark Office was made last December with the details made public on July 4, outlining a system that serves as both a "vehicle rear step and diffuser system."

The concept of a dynamic diffuser isn't a recent innovation. At the 2023 CES event, Ram introduced it with their 1500 Revolution BEV concept. Mercedes-Benz featured a similar design on their 2022 Vision EQXX concept. Despite this, the market has yet to see a dynamic diffuser that also functions as a step enter mass production.
The patent describes a design where the underside of the step functions as a diffuser and the upper side remains flat, doubling as a step. This differs from the typical diffuser because it can be retracted when it's not in use, such as during slower driving, preventing any parts from protruding beyond the vehicle's rear bumper.
Concept design for the Ram 1500 Revolution
Performance cars often employ rear diffusers to increase downforce and grip. Additionally, these components can enhance efficiency by minimizing drag from turbulent airflow, potentially extending the range of electric vehicles.
The documentation details a function designed for use in vehicles with a distinct chassis and body structure, such as the pickups produced by Ram, specifically mentioning the 2025 Ram 1500 REV model. Included in the patent are illustrations depicting the back tailgate of a pickup truck.

The style mirrors the rear hatch seen on Ram's 1500 Revolution BEV prototype. Although this prototype isn't slated to hit the market, it hints at possible design elements for upcoming Ram electric vehicles. Thus, there's a chance that features such as the dynamic air diffuser and the integrated step could appear in future models.
