Porsche Rejects Simulated Shifts for EVs: Embracing Pure Electric Performance Over Imitation

Porsche has no plans to emulate Hyundai's approach to electric vehicle powertrain sound simulation.

Drive received information from Porsche test driver Lars Kern, who conveyed that the car manufacturer doesn't find it necessary to incorporate artificial gear change indicators in electric vehicles.

"Kern expressed that their viewpoint is consistently centered on the question of why they would ever choose to deteriorate a situation."

The driver recognized that the car manufacturer is keeping an eye on competitors, such as Hyundai, who are attempting to replicate sporty features in electric vehicles. However, they consider elements like artificial shift points to be contradictory to achieving maximum speed while driving.

Kern pointed out that Porsche continues to manufacture traditional combustion engines for customers who desire that experience.

Porsche investigated the possibility of replicating the sensation of changing gears and shifting points through technology, but the concept didn't progress beyond the initial thought process. No prototype was ever developed, Kern revealed.

Hyundai engineered various features in the Ioniq 5 N such as gear change timings, power interruption and distribution, and sound systems positioned strategically throughout the car. These enhancements aim to mimic the sensation of driving a traditional gasoline vehicle in an electric model.

The initiative was purely for enjoyment, not for racing against the clock. At the unveiling of the Ioniq 5 N, Hyundai officials and representatives conveyed to Green Car Reports that the gear changes and audio enhancements are designed to heighten the driver's pleasure and give a greater impression of velocity while on the racetrack.

The anticipation for the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has paid off, as its engineered shift points, power curves, and sound generators collaborate to mimic the feel of a traditional gasoline vehicle within an electric vehicle (EV) framework. Although this provides an enjoyable drive, it was evident from track tests that these features don't necessarily translate to faster lap times. In fact, they could potentially reduce the car's speed because of the unique power curves used to create the effect of simulated gears.

Kern stated that replicating the combustion engine experience is not Porsche's goal with their electric vehicles, hence they did not pursue that direction.

The Taycan, Porsche's first electric vehicle, hit the market in 2020, and now they are rolling out their next electric model, the Macan. Additionally, an electric replacement for the 718 Boxster and Cayman models is anticipated, marking a new chapter for Porsche's sports car lineup with electric powertrains.
