Nissan Electrifies the Market: New 20-kw Bidirectional Charger for Leaf EV Unveiled
Nissan has authorized a new 20-kilowatt two-way charging unit for its Leaf electric vehicle in the United States, providing customers with an alternative method to utilize their vehicles as portable power supplies.
Since 2013, Nissan Leaf vehicles have been equipped with the necessary components for two-way charging, as pointed out by the car manufacturer during the launch of their latest charging device, the 20-kw Fermata Energy FE-20. However, it wasn't until 2022 that Nissan formally sanctioned the use of this function in the United States, with the green light given to the Fermata FE-15 charger. Similar to the 15-kw version, the FE-20 charger can also be utilized without invalidating the warranty of a Leaf car.
2025 Model of the Nissan
Nissan claims that the FE-20 model offers several enhancements compared to the FE-15, such as a 33% increase in power, a new design that reduces production expenses, and a reduced price for consumers, though the company has not provided an exact figure.
Nissan assures enhanced capacity for energy transfer between the vehicle and power grid compared to the FE-15. During a demonstration at Nissan's Franklin, Tennessee, headquarters in the U.S., this feature contributed to lowering electric costs by $9,450 over a span of four years. Additionally, Fermata Energy's proprietary software aids users in cutting expenses by utilizing the vehicle's battery to supply electricity to structures during peak times when energy prices are at their highest.
2025 model of the Nissan
Various firms, including Wallbox, offer two-way charging units enabling individuals to employ electric vehicles as emergency energy reserves, however, this is contingent upon green lights from car manufacturers such as Nissan. Similar to its predecessor, the FE-15, the FE-20 charging device obtained clearance for compatibility with the Nissan Leaf once it fulfilled Nissan's specific standards and secured a UL 1741 certification.
The Nissan Leaf, which hasn't seen a refresh in quite some time, remains the sole electric vehicle adhering to the CHAdeMO rapid charging norm. Additionally, it has lost eligibility for the federal electric vehicle tax incentive. Despite this, in certain scenarios, it manages to maintain a lower cost point than Nissan's own budget vehicle, the Versa. Another feature that might draw buyers to this older model is its capability for bidirectional charging, offering value beyond just an attractive sticker price.
