Marc Marquez’s Aragon Triumph Highlights Championship Challenge, But Consistency Remains Key
Marc Marquez's hopes for the championship are still distant, even though he secured a win at the Aragon MotoGP.
Marc Marquez, an eight-time World Champion, secured a win at the Aragon MotoGP, cutting his championship points gap to 70. Despite this achievement, he believes he remains too distant to be seen as a serious title challenger at this stage.
Besides his 70-point gap from Jorge Martin, Marquez trails by 47 points behind Francesco Bagnaia, who has achieved the most wins in 2024 with seven Grand Prix victories and three Sprint race triumphs.
During the post-race press conference at Aragon, Marquez conceded, "No, we are far," when questioned about his chances for the championship. He explained, "We continue to lose points, increasingly more. We are too far behind."
"Furthermore, it's not just a single rider, but two riders who demonstrate greater consistency than our team."
"A single weekend won't transform our lives. It will certainly be beneficial, but it won't be a game-changer. We're too far behind to contend for the championship this year."
"However, our aim should be to secure a spot in the top three. That's a feasible target. There are still many points up for grabs and a lot of unpredictable events, especially considering the stormy, rainy conditions prevalent in Asia."
"We continue to have fun, which is what matters most to me, and we'll strive to maintain our efforts and compete with the best."
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency to contend for the championship, Marquez noted the atypical conditions during the Aragon race.
"This weekend has been fantastic, and the atmosphere has been incredible," he commented. "However, we need to stay grounded because the conditions were quite unique. Personally, the Red Bull Ring GP mattered more to me because I felt great and was performing at a level very close to the top competitors."
"In this context, winning is extremely valuable, and our next goal is to achieve consistency. It's important to gain insights during the races, though I anticipate that certain weekends will pose greater challenges than others. Consistency will be the next crucial element."
Marquez highlighted Enea Bastianini's situation as an example. Despite being viewed as a serious contender for the championship following his two victories at the British Grand Prix, Bastianini only managed to secure fifth place in Aragon after starting from 14th position in the qualifiers.
Marquez stated that while they aim to replicate past successes, their speed can vary from weekend to weekend—citing Enea Bastianini's performance at Silverstone as an example. He emphasized that achieving consistency is a key goal, though it remains the most challenging aspect to master.
Jorge Martin, who is ahead in the championship by 23 points following the Aragon race, somewhat concurred with Marquez.
The championship leader commented, "Marc is currently quite distant, but should he begin securing victories every race weekend, he could become a contender for the title."
"Just two races back, Enea Bastianini was a strong contender for the championship, then he fell out of the running. Now, Marc is in the spotlight; after impressive performances in Austria and here, he’s definitely one of the top riders on the grid and a serious championship contender."
