Marc Marquez Triumphs in Perfect Aragon MotoGP Weekend, Ending Three-Year Victory Drought
Marc Marquez admitted to feeling self-imposed pressure to have an ideal MotoGP weekend in Aragon. He mentioned that during the Sprint, he wasn't having fun because he realized the significance of the day's events.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win last weekend at the Aragon MotoGP, calling the weekend "perfect" after his triumphant performance.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session Marquez didn't lead was the Warm Up, which was damp from rain overnight and into Sunday morning, because he didn't post a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as flawless during the post-race press conference. He mentioned that they were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and the team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez spoke about the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win, and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"We felt incredible from the start of the race," he remarked. "It was an extremely lengthy race, and managing emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3-4kg."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back with each step, winning this was unbelievable. I immediately began reflecting on the entire journey, the support from everyone around me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team offering me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and will continue striving forward."
Marquez established a significant lead during the race, allowing him leisure to contemplate during the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about standing on the podium," he mentioned. "Beyond the podium, the Gresini garage is always a lively and joyful place; it's constantly a celebration there."
"Additionally, the primary factor was the support from those around me. In extremely challenging times, having a compassionate and caring team—individuals who seemed to feel the pain even more than I did—was crucial and made all the difference."
"The celebration felt unusual as the excitement was greater during other races where we finished second or third. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to secure a Grand Prix victory, especially after leading in every session except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up.
“Today, I felt a lot of pressure,” he mentioned. “Like you saw in the Sprint yesterday, I wasn’t having fun because I was aware that today was a crucial day and I recognized that I had a significant chance.”
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you have the necessary speed, it seems like you can handle the circumstances, remain steady, and make intelligent decisions; but fundamentally, you are the same person. It's simply very challenging to manage things without that speed."
“Let’s aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to keep up with the leading competitors.”
Marquez views this victory as significant as his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first success after suffering a broken arm during the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany," Marquez remarked.
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and facing tough times, the significance of each win increases."
"Indeed, I have won 60 races, but those two wins, along with my first MotoGP victory, stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide that additional assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was just riding effortlessly, maintaining a smooth flow, but I was also extremely focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite this being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez noted that a race victory is within reach. "At that moment, I understood that we will get our chances," he explained. However, he added that competing for the championship requires ongoing effort.
"However, in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
