Jorge Martin’s Electrifying Misano Sprint: ‘It Felt Like the Others Hadn’t Started Yet
Jorge Martin described his “amazing” Misano MotoGP start as “The others hadn’t even begun yet.”
“The launch was solid, but the response was remarkable.”
Jorge Martin, the Pramac Ducati racer, remarked that it seemed as if "the others hadn't even begun" when he surged off the starting line, leading to his sprint win at the MotoGP San Marino Grand Prix.
Martin faced a challenging qualifying session at Misano on Saturday morning and ended up in fourth place, while his main championship competitor, Francesco Bagnaia, secured the pole position.
In the 13-lap sprint, Martin surged from fourth place to take the lead at Turn 1 and maintained his position until the end, ultimately defeating Bagnaia by 1.495 seconds.
The victory, his initial triumph in a sprint race since the German Grand Prix in July, has placed Martin 26 points ahead in the rankings.
Following the event, Martin mentioned that he was most impressed by how he reacted to the lights rather than his actual start. He felt "really comfortable, really confident" while leading.
"It definitely feels great to always come out on top," he remarked on Saturday afternoon.
"This is crucial. I'm pleased that I put in my full effort."
"I plan to give it my all again tomorrow. Even if I come in second place, I will be just as happy as I am today. However, my goal remains the same: to win, and I will put in my best effort to achieve that."
"It was an extraordinary beginning. I believe the response was phenomenal, even more so than the start itself."
"The beginning went well, but what really stood out was the response. I noticed that the others hadn't even begun when I was already way ahead."
"Later, I noticed Pecco slowing down sooner than usual, so I seized the opportunity and everything went flawlessly."
"Following that, being in the lead felt very natural and I was quite sure of myself, as I usually ride alone. It was a typical situation for me."
Martin emerged victorious in the sprint race, despite widespread expectations that Bagnaia would lead the pack at Misano on Saturday after securing an impressive pole position.
The outcome has ensured that Martin will remain at the top of the championship standings after the San Marino GP, regardless of Sunday’s events.
When questioned whether this victory would mentally affect his competitor, he responded: “I’m not sure. It doesn’t really matter to me. What’s important is what I mentioned earlier—putting in my best effort and being satisfied with whatever I can achieve.”
The selection of tires for Sunday’s grand prix is still uncertain, as both the medium and soft compounds appear to be feasible for the entire race distance.
Throughout Friday's practice sessions, Martin demonstrated remarkable performance on both types of tires and believes he has the potential to compete for a win using either one.
He mentioned that he doesn't believe the choice of tires for Sunday will be critical.
“I believe it will be more challenging. I think both tire options have a chance to win, so it will definitely be intriguing tonight to try to figure it out.
“However, I’m feeling calm since I believe I can perform well on either soft or medium tires.”
