Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Crash at Aragon, Eyes Championship Lead Ahead of San Marino GP
Jorge Martin shares his perspective on the collision between Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez at the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship improved at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Despite Bagnaia having a disappointing weekend in terms of points, Martin also experienced a similar pattern by securing second place in both races, marking his sixth consecutive second-place finish since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend concluded with a late-race collision involving Alex Marquez. Despite a rough start, Bagnaia was making his way up the ranks and reached Marquez's rear tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though it was evident he was hesitant to strongly favor any side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You should inquire with Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez."
"Certainly, it was hard to observe due to the large amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't tilt further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2, where Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was a collision."
"I hope they weren't hurt, as they appeared to be near the bikes following the crash. I wish they are fine for the upcoming race."
Following the accident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no bone fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend marks the next event in the MotoGP World Championship, the San Marino Grand Prix, taking place at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury following a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year, he will have just one week to recover from the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Even though Bagnaia has secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who claimed both wins in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his competitor's home race with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
