Jorge Martin Analyzes Pecco Bagnaia-Alex Marquez Crash: Implications for Aragon MotoGP and Championship Battle
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the accident between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin’s chances of winning the championship improved at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his ongoing impressive performance and Francesco Bagnaia’s crash.
Martin entered Aragon five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following Bagnaia's wins in both the Sprint and the Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a tough weekend in terms of earning points, while Martin continued his streak of finishing second, securing the runner-up position in both races for the weekend. This marks the sixth consecutive race since the summer break where Martin has placed second.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Following an unremarkable start, Bagnaia made his way up the pack and caught up to Marquez's back tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at the 12th turn. Seizing the opportunity, Bagnaia attempted to overtake, but both riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the press conference after the race, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to strongly support any particular stance.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You should inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it’s hard to notice because there was a significant amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't tilt further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the last lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez, resulting in a collision."
"I really hope they're alright because it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash. I wish them well for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host the next event in the MotoGP World Championship, the San Marino Grand Prix. Last year, Bagnaia participated in the race with a leg injury sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will have just one week to recover from the Aragon race before competing at Misano.
Even though Bagnaia has secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, Martin was the one who claimed victory in both 2023 races. This year, the Spanish rider brings a 23-point lead in the championship standings to his competitor's home event.
