Jeep Unveils All-Electric 2024 Wagoneer S: A 300-Mile Range Challenger to the Grand Cherokee

The all-new 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S EV, which stands out against the Grand Cherokee, boasts a range exceeding 300 miles. After much anticipation through repeated teases, Jeep has finally unveiled its inaugural electric vehicle tailored for the North American market. Set to launch in the autumn of 2024, it's nearly time for its debut.

The Wagoneer S is exclusively available as an electric vehicle, boasting a power output of 600 horsepower and a torque of 617 pound-feet. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. Jeep has indicated that the vehicle will have a range exceeding 300 miles according to EPA estimates, although this has not been formally confirmed. Additionally, it comes equipped with a versatile traction management system that includes settings for Auto, Sport, Eco, Snow, and Sand, ensuring some capability for off-road adventures.

Constructed using Stellantis' STLA Large framework, the Wagoneer S incorporates innovative modular electric drive modules that merge the motor, gears, and power electronics into one streamlined package. The company suggests that a future version of the Wagoneer S could include a range-extending feature, taking a page from the plug-in Ram 1500 Ramcharger's playbook, though the timing of this addition to the series remains uncertain. To put it bluntly, as of now, there isn't a Wagoneer S model available that comes with a range-extending drivetrain option.

According to Jeep, the classic seven-slot grille has been repurposed from air intake to enhancing visibility, featuring lighting that aligns with the driver's line of sight and a hood designed to cut through the air efficiently. Additionally, the vehicle incorporates sleek door handles, built-in fins, and protective panels on the underside to streamline airflow. A spoiler at the back also works to draw air beneath the end of the roof, achieving a drag coefficient of just 0.294. This makes it 15% more aerodynamic than the typical SUV, and it achieves this without resorting to the conventional teardrop design.

The interior arrangement of the Wagoneer S seems to be a mixed experience. In terms of exterior dimensions, the Wagoneer S is comparable to the Grand Cherokee or Toyota Highlander, measuring approximately 192 inches in length with a wheelbase of 113.0 inches. Jeep highlights that the Wagoneer S boasts an interior space of 99.5 cubic feet, which is around 15 cubic feet larger than the Grand Cherokee—though it's not more spacious than the VW ID.4 or Nissan Ariya when comparing the figures. Behind the back seats, there's a cargo capacity of 30.6 cubic feet, which expands to 61.0 cubic feet once the seats are collapsed to create a flat area.

As a tall individual at 6 feet 6 inches, I found the rear seating to provide ample space for legs, yet the headspace was somewhat limited because of the sunroof's design.

While we can anticipate additional design options in the future, the initial Launch Edition features 20-inch wheels with a glossy black finish and accents in both gloss-black and neutral gray. The exterior is devoid of any chrome elements, and inside, Jeep has replaced the traditional piano-black accents with a novel metallic finish that boasts a cross-hatch pattern, alongside ceramic-coated aluminum details. Design head Ralph Gilles describes this as a stark contrast to conventional wooden trims. The Wagoneer S also eschews leather interiors, opting instead for a unique vinyl called Cabo, which boasts an anti-microbial layer and is crafted from recycled materials. This vinyl is utilized for the seating, steering wheel, and other interior components.

The Wagoneer S is equipped with a battery capacity of 100 kilowatt-hours operating on a 400-volt system. According to Jeep, when utilizing a direct current rapid charging station with a maximum output of around 200 kilowatts, the vehicle's charge can surge from 20% to 80% in just 23 minutes. Each initial version of the Wagoneer S comes with the option of a 48-amp, 11.5-kilowatt home alternating current charging unit or complimentary credits for Free2Move's public charging network.
