Ionna Charges Ahead: Automakers Unite to Build Massive EV Charging Network as Tesla Supercharger Expansion Slows

Published

on

Amidst a slowdown in Tesla's expansion of Supercharger facilities, Ionna is ramping up its electric vehicle charging initiatives. The U.S. and Canadian network, financially backed by seven car manufacturers, seems undeterred by Tesla's recent scaling back.

On Tuesday, the charging network reiterated its pledge to establish a grid of over 30,000 potent fast-charging ports located in cities and near major roads. It also suggested that progress is being made on the initial installations, with expectations to launch its inaugural charging stations in the U.S. come 2024.

Initially revealed in July 2023 and supported by major automotive players such as BMW Group, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis, Ionna kicked off its business and was named in February. The company has since started to come out of its phase of operating in secret.

The unveiling of the Ionna EV charging network highlights North America.

The recent declaration confirmed that the charging network has set up its central hub in Durham, North Carolina. Additionally, it unveiled key leadership roles, including Derek Rush as the new CFO, who previously held the same position at BP Pulse, Ricardo Stamatti taking on the role of chief product officer after his tenure at Stellantis Energy, and Shankar Muthukumar stepping in as COO, with his past experience at Mortenson. The appointment of CEO Seth Cutler had been made public earlier in February.

Ionna initially emphasized its commitment to enhancing the customer's journey by prioritizing a seamless user interface, consistent operational performance, and overall dependability, along with improved services at charging stations. It's reasonable to anticipate that the typical spots at the far end of large retail store parking areas will not meet these new standards.

The company has announced that its network will run entirely on clean energy and will include features such as booking capabilities and smart navigation. Additionally, it will support seamless Plug & Charge technology from the outset, reducing the necessity for credit card transactions and app interactions. It has also revealed that the initial setup will include 350-kw connectors, with a commitment to offering the most powerful charging options and cutting-edge technology continually.

Charging with Ionity in France

In North America, this could be seen as the counterpart to the Ionity rapid-charging grid that was introduced in Europe in 2017 by Ford, VW, and Audi. This European network contributed to pushing the continent's electric vehicle market ahead of the US, which had been lagging at that point. Electrify America originated from Volkswagen's obligations following the diesel emissions scandal and has been predominantly run by VW, aside from funding from Siemens. However, there is an expansion strategy in place to increase the network by 25% by the year 2024.

Certain sites under the Ionna brand might be in the running for the national NEVI funds, possibly alongside various other providers, or they could find themselves in a rivalry with the Tesla Supercharger grid if Tesla decides to resume its expansion efforts.

Since the initial unveiling of Ionna, there have been significant developments in the electric vehicle (EV) charging sector. The dependability of EV charging stations has sparked widespread discussion. Additionally, there's a move within the industry towards adopting the Tesla-inspired North American Charging Standard (NACS) for future EV models. This shift will enable a variety of car manufacturers to use Tesla's Supercharger stations, potentially creating a new source of income for Tesla. However, Tesla recently disbanded the majority of its Supercharger division, casting uncertainty on the expansion of this charging infrastructure.

Officials from Ionna have not disclosed specifics about the use of connectors or adapters for their charging equipment. However, they have assured Green Car Reports that their charging stations will be equipped to handle electric vehicles with any type of charge port.

Stamatti, the chief product officer, assured Green Car Reports of their dedication to both formats, emphasizing that despite the introduction of NACS, the production of EVs equipped with CCS ports will persist, alongside the numerous ones presently operational. He stated, "It's accessible to everyone and we're prepared to support both types."

Research indicates that Tesla's dominance in the Supercharger sector is dwindling when compared to other public charging networks. Nissan has issued a recall for certain models of the Ariya due to a traditional oil leakage issue. Meanwhile, the Chevy Blazer EV will be available at a reduced starting price. More on these developments at Green Car Reports. Chevrolet has decided to slash the starting cost of the Blazer EV LT and RS models for the year 2025, but there's a twist. In both models, features that used to come standard will now be offered as add-ons in the 2025 Chevy Blazer EV's pricing structure. Additionally, with more affordable front-wheel-drive LT versions and the high-powered SS model in the pipeline, the lineup is expanding.

A manufacturing defect in a limited batch of Ariya EVs may cause unusual deterioration in the motor assembly, potentially resulting in diminished power.

Research indicates that while the Tesla Supercharger network's satisfaction levels have remained stable, competing networks have shown enhancements.

Based on the initial cost, the 2025 Blazer EV has been priced at a reduction of up to $1,200.

The Polestar 3 aims for both energy-saving and dynamic driving, delivering impressively on performance. Virginia has recently eliminated regulations that mandated that 35% of all new vehicles sold must be either fully electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles by 2026, with a goal of reaching 100% by 2035. However, numerous other states are continuing to follow California's lead on this matter.

Does the aesthetic of the latest electric battery model draw from the contentious instrument, and if so, is it significant?

What is the safety status of the largest, most fuel-consuming SUVs out there? What's causing the sluggish progress of the federal government's $7.5 billion electric vehicle charging infrastructure? We're reflecting on these topics in our weekly recap at Green Car Reports, covering the events of the week up to June 6, 2024. Once again, we've had a significant week filled with…

Could a potential spike in electric vehicle purchases render these benchmarks obsolete, or might car manufacturers continue to produce as many gasoline-powered trucks as possible?

Take a look at initial test drives for the Rivian R1S and R1T, along with the Toyota Crown Signia hybrid wagon. Recent survey findings indicate a growing number of Americans are postponing their electric vehicle purchases because of charging concerns. And contrary to some beliefs, non-hybrid SUVs with high fuel consumption aren't necessarily safer. Stay tuned for this and other stories at Green Car Reports. Among the major…
