Hyundai Set to Unveil Ioniq 9 Electric SUV in 2024: A Three-Row Crossover Poised for a Green Future

Hyundai is set to introduce a new electric SUV with three rows of seating towards the end of this year, as announced by the company.

Hyundai is set to unveil a new, yet-to-be-named three-row crossover as part of its 2025 lineup. The upcoming model was mentioned in a recent press release from Hyundai, which outlined updates for the designated model year. The release provided no further information but did assure that the global debut is scheduled for some time in

Anticipation has been building for this sizeable crossover vehicle. It first came into the spotlight when the Ioniq EV sub-brand was introduced in 2020, and later gained further attention with the debut of the Hyundai Seven concept at the 2021 Los Angeles auto show.

The naming convention for the Seven concept suggests that its eventual market version, previously seen undergoing tests, is expected to be designated as the Hyundai Ioniq 7. This fits with its placement above the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 models. However, recent information from Korean sources points towards a probable naming as the Ioniq 9, aligning it with the Kia EV9, with which it could share certain features.

The potential new Hyundai crossover, if it mirrors the EV9, could come with options like a 76.1-kWh battery and a single motor that powers the rear wheels at its entry-level. Additionally, there might be an upgraded version with a 99.8-kWh battery that could either stick to rear-wheel drive or include a dual motor that supports all-wheel drive. When equipped with the bigger battery and a single motor setup, the EV9 boasts an EPA range topping out at 304 miles.

In other news, the upscale Genesis brand, a division of Hyundai, is gearing up to introduce a new flagship SUV, the GV90. This model, hinted at by the Genesis Neolun design showcased before the 2024 New York auto show, is anticipated to hit the market in 2026.

It is said that the GV90 is set to be manufactured in South Korea, whereas the manufacturing of the EV9 for the American market has started transitioning to the West Point facility in Georgia. Hyundai operates an electric vehicle facility in Georgia known as the "Metaplant," where the Ioniq 5 will be the first to be assembled. However, Hyundai will need to allocate space for the production of its three-row vehicle to ensure it qualifies for tax incentives.
