Honda CEO Advocates for Gradual EV Transition Amidst Auto Industry’s Electric Shift and Charging Infrastructure Challenges
The head of Honda regarding electric vehicles: "You can't compel a customer to alter their preferences."
Right now, electric vehicles and hybrids are experiencing a contradictory trend.
In a conversation with The Drive during the 2024 Monterey Car Week, the President and CEO of American Honda, Kazuhiro Takizawa, discussed electric vehicles, their surrounding environments, and customer perspectives.
Takizawa expressed, "It's not possible to coerce a customer into altering their opinion. To a certain extent, there might be ways to encourage them, but it's simply not feasible to compel individuals, especially those residing in areas like the Midwest where there's a lack of charging facilities."
Takizawa is of the opinion that despite inducements, the shift from traditional internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles won't happen quickly. The executive anticipates a slow transition.
During the occasion, Acura showcased a concept for a Performance EV, providing a glimpse into one of the initial electric vehicles the premium car manufacturer plans to produce using the Honda 0 platform engineered internally. The finished product is expected to come out of the production facilities at the company's Marysville Auto Plant in Ohio by 2025.
Honda is in the midst of a significant $700 million overhaul at three of its factories, in addition to building a $3.5 billion battery facility, all aimed at ramping up the mass production of electric vehicles in the United States. These initiatives may enable Honda to surpass every other competitor in the U.S. electric vehicle output, with the exception of Tesla.
Takizawa made some remarks shortly before Ford revamped its approach to electric vehicles, scrapped its plans for a three-row electric vehicle, and intensified its focus on hybrid vehicles.
During the 2024 Monterey Car Week, Lucid's Chief Executive Officer, Peter Rawlinson, mentioned that the current downturn in the electric vehicle market is just a short-term hiccup, adding that shifting focus back to hybrids is a misguided path. Lucid's head of design and brand, Derek Jenkins, alongside Rawlinson, pointed out that despite the increasing number of electric vehicle choices available to buyers, these choices fail to impress.
Takizawa believes that electric vehicles powered by batteries are the optimal solution for achieving a carbon-neutral environment. However, he pointed out that the current infrastructure for charging is inadequate. He also mentioned that resolving societal challenges and implementing changes within society is a process that requires time.
Honda's present electric vehicle, named the Prologue, essentially shares its design with the Chevrolet Blazer EV and is built on General Motors' Ultium architecture. In February, during the vehicle's debut, Green Car Reports observed that the SUV's approach aims to be more mainstream, rather than targeting a specific segment like Toyota's bZ4x. The Prologue is designed to appeal to existing Honda customers who are interested in electric vehicles, specifically those who drive models such as the Accord, CR-V, and Passport.
