GM’s Electric Game Changer: 2026 Chevy Bolt EV Set to Become Most Affordable EV in the US
General Motors executive Marissa West stated that the Chevrolet Bolt EV, set to make a comeback in 2023, will hold the title of the least expensive electric vehicle in America. This revelation was made during a conversation with Automotive News, as reported recently.
General Motors halted production of the Bolt EV as 2023 drew to a close, however, the company has highlighted its return. West notes that the upcoming version of the Bolt EV will utilize the same Ultium platform as GM's other electric vehicles, ensuring affordability through mass production benefits.
2022 Chevy Bolt Electric Vehicle
West expressed enthusiasm about introducing the Bolt featuring the Ultium framework, aiming to make it the most cost-effective option available by 2025. He mentioned that the Ultium foundation will provide a "great range" and notably efficient charging times.
General Motors has verified that its upcoming Bolt EV will be manufactured at the company's Fairfax Assembly facility in Kansas, with production kicking off towards the end of 2025. This timeline suggests that the vehicle will likely be marketed as a 2026 model, in line with GM's usual release schedule. This new iteration of the Bolt EV will take the place of the gasoline-powered Chevy Malibu midsize sedan, which is currently phasing out of production at the Kansas factory. The future model is expected to be a more affordable version of the Bolt EV, featuring LFP battery cells. General Motors has also stated that this will be the first vehicle in the United States to incorporate this type of battery within its Ultium range of products.
2018 Model of the Chevrolet
The Bolt EV hit the market as a 2017 edition and was seen as a significant breakthrough in making electric vehicles more affordable. A makeover for the 2022 model year enhanced the Bolt EV and introduced a new version called the Bolt EUV to the range.
The history of the Bolt EV isn't without its faults. A recall in 2021 affected around 140,000 Bolt EV and Bolt EUV models across North America due to two distinct production flaws in the battery cells provided by LG Energy Solution, GM's collaborator, which resulted in numerous fires. General Motors had to swap out battery modules or, in certain cases, the whole battery unit for some vehicles. Additionally, as a result of a collective lawsuit against GM and LG, some car owners received compensation of up to $1,400.
