Ford Realigns Production Strategy: Super Duty Trucks to Roll Out from Former EV Plant in Oakville
Ford has decided to manufacture its Super Duty heavy-duty pickup trucks at a plant that was originally intended for electric vehicle production.
On Thursday, the car manufacturer declared its plans to enhance its Super Duty truck production by initiating manufacturing at the Oakville Assembly Complex located in Ontario, Canada, with the commencement slated for 2026. This expansion is set to boost production capabilities by an additional 100,000 vehicles, as per Ford's statements. Additionally, the company anticipates creating more job opportunities and possibly extending work hours at one of its engine manufacturing facilities in Ontario, along with three component factories in the United States. These efforts are in line with supporting the increased production demands. Ford disclosed that during the first six months of 2024, the two factories already engaged in Super Duty truck production had rolled out 200,000 trucks.
Manufacturing facility for Ford in Oak
The manufacturing facility in Oakville, which used to produce the Ford Edge and Lincoln Nautilus crossover vehicles, is set to transition to electric vehicle manufacturing beginning this year. Back in 2020, Ford announced plans to introduce five electric vehicle models at this facility, with production of the final model expected by 2028. This decision was part of a fresh agreement with the union in the area, following Ford's decision not to pursue further production of the Edge and Nautilus models at the Oakville location.
Recently, Ford has been scaling down its ambitions for electric vehicles. This past April, the company shared that it would be postponing the release of its upcoming electric truck, the T3, by 12 months. Additionally, a new electric SUV with three rows of seating that had been disclosed earlier is now expected to hit the market two years behind schedule. During that announcement, Ford indicated a shift in strategy towards hybrid vehicles, revealing intentions to incorporate a hybrid engine option across its entire range.

Simultaneously, Ford disclosed fiscal reports indicating considerable financial setbacks in its electric vehicle sector, specifically within its Model E division which focuses on electric consumer vehicles. Despite this, other divisions such as Ford Pro, which caters to commercial fleets, also market electric vehicles. Ford had made commitments to produce more cost-effective electric vehicles with the potential for higher sales volumes, although it is expected that these models will not be immediately available.
In recent developments, Ford has been caught on camera conducting trials of what seems to be an electrified pickup equipped with in-wheel motors, sporting the eight-lug wheels typically found on robust trucks such as the Super Duty. However, it's still uncertain if this innovation will make it to the manufacturing stage.
