Die Evolution des Offroad-Monarchen: Dimensionen und DNA der Mercedes G-Klasse 2024
The 2024 Mercedes G-Class: A Comprehensive Guide to the Dimensions of the Off-Road Monarch
The Mercedes G-Class continues to evolve while staying true to its core essence
Introduced in 1979, the Mercedes G-Class stands as a timeless off-road icon, a vehicle that has transcended eras without compromising its inherent characteristics. This is evident both in its mechanical features – having always been built with a ladder frame and rigid axles – and in its design elements. What has evolved with each new generation are the technical specifications and the size of the vehicle.
Throughout his 45-year career, he has expanded from an initial length of 4.15 meters—back when it was still a three-door model—to its current size of 4.62 meters. Similar to a typical SUV, it provides ample interior space.

2024 Mercedes G-Class: the dimensions
The current model of the Mercedes G-Class measures 4.6 meters (4624 mm) in length, 1.93 meters (1931 mm) in width, 2 meters (2042 mm) in height, and features a wheelbase—the distance between the center of the front wheel to the center of the rear wheel—of 2.89 meters (2890 mm). These dimensions place it within the mid-sized SUV category, alongside vehicles like the GLC which is 11 cm longer.
Please refrain from labeling the Mercedes G-Class as an "SUV"; that would be an insult to its grandeur! Also, take note of the spare tire mounted on the rear door: It's a signature feature of the Mercedes G-Class, yet it adds an extra 20 cm to its length, making it a total of 4.82 meters.

The 2024 Mercedes G-Class, Spaciousness and Cargo Space
True off-road vehicles resist the trend of adopting sleek, coupe-like body shapes, instead, they prioritize practical design elements that enhance visibility and awareness of the surrounding environment. This results in bold, angular surfaces, vertical side panels, and a roof that runs perfectly parallel to the ground.
The chassis, featuring its longitudinal beams, offers a ground clearance that puts a new perspective on the term "getting in." Once you're inside, it becomes apparent that the legroom available to those seated in the back isn't as generous.

Even a professional basketball player wouldn't struggle with the amount of headroom available. The person seated in the center won't have to contend with a transmission tunnel or odd curves in the seat and backrest. Additionally, there's no shortage of air vents and USB ports.
The trunk offers a minimum capacity of 640 liters; however, the gullwing door on the left side makes it challenging to load items when parked in tight spaces. Although the floor is elevated, it's quite flat and comes well-fitted with hooks, rings, and a 12-volt outlet.

Regarding the engine options, the recently updated 2024 Mercedes G-Class comes exclusively with electrified engines, including both gasoline and diesel variants. The only current exception is the 4.4-liter V8 engine with a displacement of 585 liters found in the AMG G 63 model. Of course, all models are equipped with four-wheel drive and feature three locking differentials. The brand also recently introduced a major innovation in the 45-year history of the G-Class: the G 580, a fully electric version of the German SUV that boasts 587 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque. In this case, the dimensions are slightly different.
The 2024 Mercedes G-Class stands alone in its segment, with no other SUV matching up as a true alternative or rival. The sole exception is the Land Rover Defender, which, despite abandoning the traditional ladder chassis in its latest iteration, continues to be a symbol of off-road prowess. Otherwise, size is not a significant factor; the real contenders to the G-Class are distinguished by their extreme off-roading capabilities.
This category includes the American-made Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler, the British Ineos Fusilier (electric) and Grenadier, and the Japanese Toyota Land Cruiser. Also included, on the smaller end of the spectrum, is the Suzuki Jimny.
