Chevy’s New Contender: The 2024 Equinox EV Offers Tesla-Rivaling Range at a Competitive Price

Published

on

Critique: The latest electric offering from Chevrolet, the Equinox EV for 2024, stands out as a key release in this year's electric vehicle market. This vehicle, essentially a small crossover SUV, boasts an impressive range of 285 to 319 miles as per EPA's estimates and comes with an attractive starting price of $43,295, which encompasses the required $1,395 shipping charge.

The company has assured that a base model with a starting price of $34,995 will be available "later this year."

The Chevy Equinox EV, which is a front-wheel-drive vehicle and has a range of 319 miles, is priced at $43,295. It competes closely with the Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD, which offers a slightly higher range of 320 miles but comes with a higher price tag of $46,630. Currently, all models of these two vehicles are eligible for the $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit, which has now been transformed into an instant rebate at the time of purchase for qualified buyers. It's important to note that Tesla, a dominant force in the EV market, frequently updates its vehicle specifications and pricing, so it's advisable to verify these details personally.

2024 Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

The electric version of the Equinox is designed to appeal to the mass market with its standard features. It avoids many of the unusual elements that might deter those new to electric vehicles by incorporating familiar controls such as a lever for the windshield wipers and traditional buttons and dials for managing the temperature and sound system. Though it comes with regenerative braking and the option for one-pedal driving, these can be turned off to mimic the driving experience of a regular car with a standard automatic transmission. However, a disadvantage is the absence of a front storage compartment, which seems like a missed chance. This is particularly inconvenient because the included portable charger is inconveniently placed under all the baggage in the back, requiring you to unload everything to access it.

Chevy's most compact electric vehicle stands apart from the Tesla Model Y, which not only topped global electric vehicle sales last year but also outpaced all other individual vehicle sales. This Chevy model also faces competition from other compact electric SUVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Nissan Ariya, and Volkswagen ID.4.

The arrival of the Equinox EV has been eagerly anticipated, and it's expected to be Chevrolet's most produced electric vehicle. General Motors has indicated that its expected launch in 2023 is the reason behind the discontinuation of the Bolt EV production the previous year.

The embarrassing setback of a year to a year and a half in rolling out Ultium vehicles was not caused by issues at General Motors' battery facilities, but rather by a supplier's failure to deliver dependable, fast-paced automation equipment needed for the assembly of intricate Ultium battery modules. As models such as the Blazer EV, Silverado EV, and Equinox EV (with front-wheel drive) begin to reach GM dealerships, it appears that these difficulties are now a thing of the past, a situation that GM is optimistic will remain unchanged.

After a full day and over a hundred-mile journey with a pair of Equinox EVs back in mid-May, we came away quite taken by the experience. The bulk of our drive was in an LT model equipped with front-wheel drive, though we had a short stint in an AWD model as well. By the time this evaluation reaches you, the majority of Chevrolet dealerships are likely to have the Equinox EVs available for purchase.

Upcoming 2024 Chevy Electric Equinox

Chevy's Equinox EV has been labeled as a "compact crossover" SUV, a category that dominates the U.S. market, maai-allcreator.com">king up one-fourth of the vehicle sales, even outpacing midsize SUVs and full-size pickups. However, the Equinox EV stands out with its size within this group. In comparison to its gasoline-powered counterpart, which it doesn't share a frame with, the electric model is significantly larger—approximately 8 inches longer, reaching 191 inches, and 12 inches wider, measuring 85 inches across with its mirrors extended. It maintains the same height at 65 inches but stretches out with a 116-inch wheelbase, which is roughly 9 inches more. When put side by side with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Volkswagen ID.4, the Equinox EV surpasses them in length by about 8 and 11 inches, respectively. Despite its compact classification, the Equinox EV boasts considerable space inside, both in the front and back, and features a level floor for the comfort of those seated in the back.

We find the design of the Equinox EV more appealing than the larger Blazer EV. The front still features Chevy's signature "brow" and emblem, but the vehicle's sides are smoothly designed without any odd folds or decorative lines. The back end sports a chic, horizontal light bar that cuts across the ducktail-shaped liftgate, and surprisingly, it all meshes well together. We weren't provided with the drag coefficient, yet it's a completely average-looking crossover SUV—and quite a good-looking one at that. The Galaxy Grey metallic coat on our demo car really caught our eye; it's infused with subtle shades of pink or lilac, creating an eye-catching and unique color. (Of course, there's always the option for the more conventional and less exciting silver.)

Within the interior, the typical digital display setup from Chevrolet, comprising a driver-facing digital gauge display and a sizable touchscreen in the middle for both the driver and the front-seat passenger, sets the tone for the cabin's spaciousness. Chevrolet's own comparison chart points out that their middle touchscreen measures a generous 17.7 inches, outdoing the Tesla Model Y's 15.4-inch screen. Unlike the Model Y, which lacks a gauge display behind its steering wheel, the Chevrolet model boasts an 11.1-inch display in that spot.

The interior of the test vehicle, a 2LT model, featured a mostly gray and black color palette, enhanced by touches of blue and silver matte finishes. Its dashboard design was emphasized by broad, low-set displays and included two sizeable round vents on the sides, with a peculiar choice of two square vents positioned in the middle.

The Equinox electric vehicle's power and speed: A smooth experience

Every model of the Equinox electric vehicle utilizes an Ultium battery unit, which General Motors states provides 85 kilowatt-hours of effective energy. Its NMCA batteries are produced in collaboration with LG at their shared facilities. Currently, there are two such facilities in operation, located in Lordstown, Ohio, and Spring Hill, Tennessee, while another is being built in Lansing, Michigan.

Every Equinox EV is equipped with a permanent-magnet motor that propels the front wheels with a strength of 157 kilowatts (213 horsepower) and 236 pound-feet of torque, boasting a 0-to-60-mph sprint time of 8.0 seconds. For those desiring an all-wheel drive, an additional induction motor can be installed on the rear axle, elevating the total output to 212 kw (288 hp) and 333 lb-ft of torque. This enhancement shaves the 0-to-60-mph acceleration time down by 2 seconds. However, this option does reduce the EPA-estimated range by 34 miles, from 319 to 285 miles, which, although higher than many rivals, falls shy of the sought-after 300-mile threshold.

2024 Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

Despite this, the front-wheel drive version of the Equinox EV can match the rear-wheel drive Tesla Model Y Long Range's maximum distance of 319 miles, with competitors like the Ioniq 5, Ariya, and ID.4 offering slightly less at 291 to 304 miles. During a test run in a front-wheel drive 2LT model, our informal assessments indicated that Chevrolet's predicted remaining range was on point: A journey of 102 miles saw a reduction in the projected range by 106 miles, and the battery level dropped from 98 percent to 66 percent. Chevrolet proposes that with these range capacities, drivers could manage recharging similar to refueling a gas tank, implying that for regular use, daily charging would be unnecessary.

The vehicle's speed increases at a rate that's sufficient for staying in pace with typical traffic flow, yet the gas pedal isn't overly sensitive. A deliberate push is required to summon additional power, and don't expect an intense thrust. The all-wheel-drive variant does offer a slightly faster response, but it's not a dramatic difference. Additionally, we observed a bit of pulling to one side when accelerating in the AWD, which wasn't present in the front-wheel-drive model.

The electric version of the Equinox is significantly heavier by 1,600 pounds compared to its gasoline counterpart. This extra weight, combined with an extended wheelbase, contributes to a stable and assured driving experience. Its turning radius of 38 feet is typical for its class, though not as compact as the ID.4's impressive 31.5 feet. The vehicle's suspension prioritizes ride comfort, and the car's grip on the road was up to par in all the scenarios we exposed it to—keeping in mind that Detroit's landscape lacks hills and winding roads. We're eager to put the vehicle through its paces in more challenging environments.

2024 Chevy Electric Equinox Model

The capability for single-pedal driving in Chevy vehicles is consistently impressive, and their Ultium electric vehicles maintain that standard. On the touchscreen, there's an emblem that, when selected, displays a "One Pedal Driving" option defaulted to "Normal." Selecting the emblem once more deactivates regenerative braking altogether. To engage the most intense regenerative braking, however, the driver must select "Set Level" within the same menu and then choose "High" from the subsequent dropdown list. Ideally, these steps should be consolidated into one popup to minimize the potential for the driver's attention to be diverted.

Roomy, sleek, and pays attention to the specifics

Despite being labeled as a "compact" crossover SUV, the Equinox EV offers ample interior room, both in the front and back. It boasts rear-seat legroom comparable to many midsize gas-powered SUVs, and features a level rear floor that enhances comfort for the middle seat passenger during extended trips.

Behind the steering wheel, the front of the vehicle slopes down, providing a clear perspective of the upcoming road. Adjusting the seat higher to elevate the driver's shoulders above the level of the windows also improves visibility. However, the view towards the back corners of the vehicle is quite limited, a common trait among contemporary SUVs.

The expansive center console is equipped with dual cupholders, a designated area for writing instruments, and ample room for various passenger belongings. Beneath the upper section of the console, there's a sizable storage compartment on the floor, which typically goes unnoticed when the interior features black plastic and carpeting. The console's design includes a central armrest that opens towards the driver, which may be less accessible for those seated in the front passenger seat.

A symbol indicating energy, located on a diminutive button positioned above the middle dashboard display, performs a dual role: a single press silences the sound, while a subsequent press deactivates the display.

The storage space behind the back seats in the cargo area measures at 26.4 cubic feet, expanding to 57.2 cubic feet when the rear seatbacks are collapsed. The Equinox EV stands out from several rivals because its seats fold down nearly flat, providing an extended, even surface suitable for flat items.

2024 Model of the Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

Currently, the selection of Equinox EV models is quite straightforward. Customers have the choice between the base LT model or the "more distinctive" RS model. Each of these comes with front-wheel drive as the default, but there's the choice to upgrade to all-wheel drive. The models are further categorized into "2" and "3" levels, with the larger number representing a greater array of standard and optional features, naturally at an increased cost. Chevy has announced that the entry-level 1LT will be released later in the year.

The standard features of the 2LT model include alloy wheels measuring 19 inches, an LED light bar at the front, rails on the roof, an automatic rear hatch, seats and a steering wheel that are heated, adjustable seating for the driver, and a cruise control system that adjusts automatically. Additional features available for purchase are the Super Cruise system for hands-free cruising, and the choice between a roof painted white or a sunroof that spans the full width of the roof. The 2RS model steps up with larger 21-inch wheels paired with tires that have a slimmer profile, a roof finished in black paint, a steering wheel with a "flat-bottom" design, along with various other cosmetic enhancements.

2024 Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

Upgrading to the 3LT level introduces ventilated options for the already heated front seats, allows for power modifications to the front passenger seat, brings in heated seating for the rear side positions, incorporates a dual-zone climate system, includes a heated area for parked windshield wipers, and is equipped with 21-inch alloy rims. The 3RS offers aesthetic enhancements that are comparable to those found on the 2RS.

Although bigger wheels might have a more appealing aesthetic, we typically recommend that a smoother ride and potentially increased distance per charge might be achieved with smaller wheels, as is the case with other electric vehicles. (Chevrolet representatives were unable to confirm which wheel size the EPA's range estimates were based on.)

Our Equinox EV 2LT variant stands out among similar electric vehicles because it comes with a rear-window wiper—a common element in gas-powered crossovers that's frequently removed from electric models to cut down on wind resistance. However, it seems to lack the feature of wireless phone charging. This electric vehicle also offers an additional hitch receiver option, enabling it to tow as much as 1,500 pounds. Chevy has yet to provide details on how towing might impact the vehicle's official driving range.

One standout feature is the Super Cruise hands-free adaptive cruise control system, which ranks as one of the top systems we've evaluated. It will be available for all initial model trims (2LT, 2RS, 3LT, 3RS). During our drives with the Equinox EV, the system lived up to its promises, flawlessly executing automatic lane shifts to safely bypass slower vehicles and then impressively returning to the right lane post-overtake. This feature includes a three-year complimentary period, after which a monthly fee of $25 is required to maintain OnStar and Super Cruise services.

Electric Version of the Chevrolet Equinox

A major oversight is the lack of integration with popular smartphone interfaces. Unlike other vehicles, the Equinox EV won't support smartphone mirroring through Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. (It was pointed out by GM personnel, albeit not directly mentioning the competitor, that Tesla also doesn't provide these capabilities.) Consequently, users are compelled to rely on the car's own system and data plan—which is an additional requirement—to run their applications. GM representatives were unable to provide clarity on the ownership of the data related to the drivers' application activity, navigational details, destinations, music preferences, and other similar information.

As a journalist who utilizes Android, I found the navigational features to be less problematic than I had anticipated. Those devoted to Apple and dependent on Apple Maps, unfortunately, don't have the same fortune.

The Equinox EV comes equipped with a Google Assistant that provides directions through Google Maps, which also takes into account the vehicle's battery level. Similar to a Tesla's functionality, it directs the driver to the nearest fast-charging station and ensures the battery is warmed up for optimal charging, while also indicating the recommended charging time and the expected battery level at the next destination. (A standard feature in Teslas for over a decade.) Unfortunately, we didn't get the chance to try out this navigation option during our review of the Equinox EV. This service will be offered at no charge to vehicle owners for the first 8 years, possibly longer. GM officials mentioned that it's still undecided whether the service will remain complimentary after this period or if there will be a fee.

Efficiency versus range?

We took a drive through the countryside roads of Michigan and zoomed along the Interstate at speeds reaching 80 mph. Across a distance of 100 miles, the vehicle showed an efficiency of roughly 3 miles per kilowatt-hour. Although this may not be on par with other competitors, consumers tend to prioritize range over efficiency, often not even being familiar with the term kilowatt-hour. It's the vehicle's capability to cover 300 miles on a single charge that will garner the most attention.

All Chevrolet electric vehicles that are not as big as full-size trucks feature their charging port door at the upper part of the front-left fender, located right before the driver's side door. The integrated charger in each Equinox EV has a capacity of 11.5 kilowatts, which translates to gaining approximately 36 miles of driving range for every hour of charge.

Chevrolet's rapid charging can reach 150 kW through a Combined Charging System (CCS) connector, but there's an expectation to transition to the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector in upcoming models. Chevy estimates this allows for a rough addition of 77 miles of driving distance in a 10-minute charge. However, they acknowledge this figure is not fixed and can fluctuate due to various factors such as battery level, the power output of the charging station, surrounding temperature, among others. Additionally, the capability for two-way charging to supply power back to a home in case of a power outage is set to be introduced at a later time.

The 2024 model of the Chevrolet Equinox

We've assessed the Equinox EV and it surpasses mere adequacy, presenting itself as a strong contender in the market. It boasts a driving range on par with the Tesla Model Y, yet comes at a marginally reduced cost. We're optimistic that its integrated navigation system will enable smooth transitions between charging points, akin to Tesla's system. Notably, it's a novel addition to the booming sector of small crossover electric vehicles, distinguishing itself from the now older Model Y. Chevrolet has the capacity to manufacture up to 150,000 units annually, provided there's sufficient consumer interest.

The significant challenge facing the electric Equinox could be the inconsistent performance of sales representatives at Chevrolet's esteemed associates, the autonomous franchise dealerships.

Upcoming 2024 Chevy Electric Equinox

At the test drive event, a Chevrolet executive mentioned to the press, "We were informed that this vehicle must be spot-on from the start." It appears that the automobile has met that expectation. Here's to wishing that the sales approach, particularly towards the increasing number of first-time electric vehicle buyers, achieves a similar level of success.

Chevrolet covered the cost of flights, accommodation, and food so that Green Car Reports could deliver a first-hand account of the driving experience.
