Chevy Equinox EV 2024 Review: Affordable Range Meets Mainstream Appeal

Published

on

Evaluation: The upcoming 2024 Chevy Equinox EV offers an impressive 300-mile range at a price below $40,000. This year's significant electric vehicle release, the 2024 Chevy Equinox EV, fits into the compact crossover SUV category and boasts a 285 to 319-mile range as per EPA's estimates. It's reasonably priced, beginning at $43,295, delivery fee of $1,395 included.

A basic model with a starting price of $34,995 is still expected to be released "later this year."

The Chevy Equinox EV, with its front-wheel-drive and 319-mile range, is priced at $43,295. This makes it a close competitor to the Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD, which offers a range of 320 miles but comes with a higher price tag of $46,630. Currently, all models of both vehicles are eligible for the $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit, which is now available as an instant rebate at the time of purchase for qualified customers. It's worth noting that Tesla, a dominant force in the EV market, frequently updates its vehicle specifications and pricing.

Chevrolet's Electric Equinox: A Familiar Choice for the Everyday Consumer

The key aspect of the Chevrolet Equinox EV is that it doesn't possess the unusual features that often make electric vehicles intimidating to new buyers. The vehicle has standard operating features such as a typical lever for the windshield wipers, along with traditional buttons and dials for managing the temperature and sound system. Though it comes with options like regenerative braking and the ability to drive using a single pedal, these can be ignored, allowing the Equinox EV to operate similarly to a vehicle with a standard automatic transmission. However, it does miss out on having a front storage compartment, which is a bit of a letdown. This is especially inconvenient considering the portable charger is stored under the back storage area, requiring one to unload any cargo to access it.

Chevrolet's most compact electric vehicle stands apart from the Tesla Model Y, which not only topped electric vehicle sales globally last year but also led as the single most purchased vehicle overall. This Chevy model also faces competition from other compact electric SUVs such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Nissan Ariya, and Volkswagen ID.4.

The arrival of the Equinox EV has been highly anticipated, and it's expected to become Chevrolet's most produced electric vehicle. General Motors has indicated that its expected launch in 2023 is the reason they ceased manufacturing the Bolt EV the previous year.

The embarrassing setback of a year to a year and a half in bringing Ultium vehicles to market wasn't caused by issues at GM's battery facilities but rather a supplier's failure to deliver dependable, fast-paced automation equipment for constructing the intricate Ultium battery modules. However, with the Blazer EV, Silverado EV, and the Equinox EV (with front-wheel drive) now reaching GM's dealership locations, it appears these troubles are behind them, something GM is optimistic will be the case moving forward.

During a day-long, 100-plus mile journey in mid-May, a pair of Equinox EVs left a notable impression on us. The majority of the drive was spent behind the wheel of an LT model equipped with front-wheel drive, although we did take an all-wheel drive variant for a short spin. By the time this review goes to print, it's expected that the majority of Chevy dealerships will have the Equinox EV available for purchase.

2024 Model of the Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

The upcoming Chevy Equinox EV is positioned as a "compact crossover" in the SUV category, which is notably the largest market segment in the U.S., making up a quarter of vehicle sales – surpassing both midsize SUVs and full-size pickups in numbers. However, the dimensions of the Equinox EV exceed the usual compact size. When compared to its gasoline-powered counterpart, which it doesn't share any design with, the electric version is considerably bigger, stretching an extra eight inches in length (totaling 191 inches), expanding 12 inches in width (85 inches including the mirrors), while maintaining the same height at 65 inches. It also boasts a longer wheelbase by nine inches, measuring at 116 inches. Competitors like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Volkswagen ID.4 are smaller by eight and eleven inches in length. Despite its label, the Equinox EV provides ample space inside, both at the front and back, and features a level floor for those seated at the back.

We prefer the design of the Equinox EV over the larger Blazer EV. The iconic Chevy "brow" and emblem still adorn the front, yet the sides are smooth and free of any odd folds or highlight lines. The back end features a stylish, continuous light strip that separates the ducktail-style rear gate, and it surprisingly comes together well. Although we weren't provided with the drag coefficient, this crossover SUV looks completely ordinary, yet we found it quite attractive. The Galaxy Grey metallic color on our test vehicle really captivated us; it had a subtle touch of pink or lilac, resulting in a captivating and unique color. (And yes, there's the option for the standard, dull silver if that's more your taste.)

Within the vehicle, the typical Chevy array of a digital dashboard facing the driver and a central touch display accessible to both the driver and the front-seat passenger sets the interior's dimensions. Chevy's own comparison data points out that its central display measures a more substantial 17.7 inches, surpassing the Tesla Model Y's 15.4-inch screen. Unlike the Model Y, which lacks a dashboard panel behind the steering wheel, Chevy boasts an 11.1-inch digital gauge cluster.

The interior of the 2LT model we tested was primarily a mix of gray and black, enhanced with touches of blue and silver matte finishes adding some vibrancy to the palette. The expansive, low-set displays emphasized the dashboard's broad layout, featuring a pair of sizable round vents at the edges, contrasted by two oddly-shaped square vents positioned in the middle.

Equinox EV's power and efficiency: Smooth, not jarring

Every model of the Equinox EV utilizes an Ultium battery pack for power, which, according to GM, possesses a practical capacity of 85 kilowatt-hours. These NMCA cells are produced through a collaborative effort between GM and LG at their shared facilities. Currently, two of these facilities, located in Lordstown, Ohio, and Spring Hill, Tennessee, are operational. Meanwhile, a new one is being built in Lansing, Michigan.

The front-wheel-drive version of the Equinox EV is equipped with a magnet-based electric motor that offers 213 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. This allows the vehicle to reach 60 mph from a standstill in about 8 seconds. For those interested in an all-wheel-drive model, an additional electric motor can be installed on the rear axle. This setup boosts the total power to 288 horsepower and 333 pound-feet of torque, shaving the acceleration time down to 6 seconds for 0-60 mph. However, opting for this configuration reduces the Equinox EV's EPA-rated range by 34 miles, from 319 to 285 miles, which, while still surpassing most rivals, falls short of the coveted 300-mile threshold.

2024 Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

Despite this, the front-wheel drive version of the Equinox EV boasts a maximum distance of 319 miles on a single charge, matching the rear-wheel drive Tesla Model Y Long Range's 320 miles, while surpassing the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Nissan Ariya, and Volkswagen ID.4, which offer ranges between 291 to 304 miles. During a test drive in a FWD 2LT variant, our initial impressions indicated that Chevrolet's range prediction tool was reliable. A journey of 102 miles resulted in a corresponding decrease of 106 miles from the projected range, and the battery level dropped from 98 percent to 66 percent. Chevrolet implies that with these range capacities, users can approach recharging the vehicle like refueling with gasoline, suggesting infrequent need for charging—potentially not daily—for average driving habits.

The vehicle's acceleration is sufficiently rapid to match the pace of typical road traffic, albeit the throttle response isn't overly sensitive. A deliberate push is required to access the additional power, and don't expect a sudden, strong surge of speed. The all-wheel-drive variant does offer a marginally faster response, but the difference isn't dramatic. Additionally, the AWD model exhibits some torque steer, a trait not observed in the front-wheel-drive model.

The electric version of the Equinox weighs roughly 1,600 pounds more than its gasoline counterpart. This additional weight, coupled with its extended wheelbase, contributes to a stable and assured driving experience. Its turning radius is 38 feet, which is typical for its class, albeit not as tight as the ID.4's impressive 31.5 feet. The vehicle's suspension prioritizes a smooth ride, and its grip on the road was more than adequate in every scenario we encountered—keeping in mind that Detroit's landscape is mostly flat with limited winding roads. We're eager to put it through its paces on more challenging and diverse terrain.

Chevrolet's one-pedal driving feature has consistently delivered, and their Ultium electric vehicles maintain this standard. At the touchscreen's uppermost portion, there's a symbol that, when selected, prompts a "One Pedal Driving" menu with a default setting of "Normal." If you select the symbol once more, it deactivates regeneration completely. However, to access the most intense level of regeneration, additional steps are necessary. The driver has to press "Set Level" within the menu, followed by choosing "High" from the subsequent list that pops up. Ideally, these steps should be streamlined into a single prompt to reduce the potential for driver distraction.

The Chevy Equinox EV offers ample room and a polished feel, nailing the finer points.

Despite its classification as a "compact" crossover SUV, there's an impressive amount of interior room in the Equinox EV. This space is not only noticeable in the front but also in the back, providing rear-seat legroom comparable to larger midsize gas-powered SUVs. Additionally, the level rear floor adds comfort to the middle back seat for extended trips.

Behind the driver's seat, the front of the car slopes down, providing a clear perspective of the upcoming path. Adjusting the seat higher to elevate the driver's shoulders over the level of the windows also improves visibility. However, the ability to see out the back corner is limited, which is a common issue with modern SUVs.

The expansive center console features dual beverage holders, a designated area for writing utensils, and ample room for various passenger belongings. Beneath the console's upper section lies a sizable underfloor compartment for storage. This area typically goes unnoticed when the interior is adorned with black plastic and carpeting. The central console, situated beneath the armrest, is designed to swing open towards the driver's side, which may be less accessible for those seated in the front passenger seat.

A symbol representing energy is located on a tiny button positioned above the middle dashboard display and performs dual roles. Pressing it once silences the sound, while pressing it again shuts off the display.

The storage space available in the Equinox EV is 26.4 cubic feet behind the back seats, expanding to 57.2 cubic feet when the seats are folded. Unlike certain rival models, the seats in the Equinox EV fold down almost completely flat, creating an extended, level area for carrying flat items.

2024 Model of the Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

At present, the selection for the Equinox EV is quite straightforward. Customers have the option between the basic LT or the "more distinct" RS model. Each of these comes with front-wheel drive as standard, and there's an option to upgrade to all-wheel drive. Both trims are available in either a "2" or "3" version, with the larger number signifying a greater array of standard and optional features, naturally at an increased cost. Chevy has announced that the entry-level 1LT model will be released later in the year.

The base model 2LT is equipped with standard features such as 19-inch metallic wheels, an LED light strip at the front, railings on the roof, an automated rear door, front seats and a steering wheel with heating capabilities, adjustable seating for the driver, and a cruise control system that adapts to traffic conditions. Additional features available for purchase are the Super Cruise system allowing for automated cruising, a choice between a roof painted white or a large overhead window. The enhanced 2RS model upgrades to 21-inch wheels with tires of a slimmer profile, a roof coated in black, a steering wheel designed with a flat bottom, and various other cosmetic enhancements.

2024 Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

Upgrading to the 3LT level introduces air-conditioned capabilities to the already warm front seats, allows for electric modification of the seat for the front-side passenger, adds warming features to the two external seats in the rear, implements a two-area temperature regulation system, includes heated wiper resting spots, and is equipped with 21-inch metallic rims. The 3RS features aesthetic enhancements comparable to those found on the 2RS.

Bigger wheels might have a more appealing appearance, but it's our recommendation that a smoother ride and potentially increased distance per charge could be benefits of opting for the smaller wheels, judging by the performance of other electric vehicles. (Chevrolet representatives were unable to confirm which wheel size was used for the official EPA range estimates.)

Our model of the Equinox EV 2LT stands out from numerous electric vehicles in its category by offering a rear-window wiper as a standard addition, a component usually found on traditional gas-powered crossovers but frequently omitted from electric models to improve aerodynamics. However, it seems to lack the feature of wireless phone charging. The vehicle also has the option to include a hitch receiver, which enables it to tow a maximum of 1,500 pounds. Chevy has not provided details on how towing might impact the vehicle's estimated driving range.

One standout feature is the Super Cruise system, an exceptional hands-free adaptive cruise control option that we've evaluated highly. It's available across all model variants (2LT, 2RS, 3LT, 3RS) from the outset. During our test drives of the Equinox EV, the system operated flawlessly, delivering on its promises, including executing safe automatic lane changes to pass slower vehicles and impressively repositioning to the right lane post-overtake. Users can enjoy this system for free for the first 36 months; thereafter, maintaining OnStar and Super Cruise services will cost $25 monthly.

Electric Version of the Chevrolet Equinox

The prominent issue at hand is the absence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the Equinox EV. General Motors representatives highlighted that Tesla, albeit not mentioned by name, also doesn't provide these smartphone integration services. This compels users to rely on the car's own system and its data plan, which is an additional necessity. However, GM officials were unable to clarify who retains the data concerning the drivers' usage of apps, their navigation routes, destinations, music selections, and other related information.

As a journalist who uses Android, I found the navigation feature to be not as bad as I had anticipated. Unfortunately, those devoted to Apple and dependent on Apple Maps won't find much help here.

The Equinox EV comes equipped with an integrated Google Assistant that utilizes Google Maps for route guidance, factoring in the vehicle's battery level. Similar to a Tesla, this system directs the Equinox EV to include rapid charging points along its path and primes the battery for charging as necessary. It informs drivers of the duration required for charging and the expected battery level upon arrival at their subsequent destination, a feature that Teslas have consistently provided for over a decade.

During our evaluation of the Equinox EV, the opportunity to examine the routing function was not presented. This service will be offered at no cost to vehicle owners for a duration of eight years, with the possibility of an extension. Representatives from GM indicated that a decision regarding the continuation of this feature past that time frame and potential future pricing remains undetermined.

Efficiency versus range – which wins?

We tested the vehicle on a combination of country roads in Michigan and speedy highway stretches where speeds reached 80 mph. After covering 100 miles, we observed an energy consumption rate close to 3 miles per kilowatt-hour. While that doesn't top the charts compared to rival cars, consumers are generally more concerned with how far they can go on a single charge – range takes precedence over energy efficiency. In fact, many may not be familiar with the term 'kilowatt-hour.' Ultimately, it's the 300-mile range that will grab their attention.

Every Chevrolet electric vehicle, except for the larger trucks, features a charging port door situated on the upper section of the front-left fender, located just before the door on the driver's side. The Equinox EV comes with an onboard charger that boasts a capacity of 11.5 kilowatts, allowing for an additional 36 miles of driving range for every hour it spends charging.

High-speed charging reaching 150 kW is accessible through a CCS connection, but a transition towards the NACS connection is anticipated for upcoming models. Chevrolet estimates that this can provide around 77 miles of driving distance in a span of 10 minutes, although they acknowledge the actual results can fluctuate due to the battery's charge level, the power output of the charging station, surrounding weather conditions, among other variables. The ability to send power back to the grid or use the vehicle for home power in emergencies (V2H) will be introduced at a later time.

2024 Model of the Chevy Equinox, Now

The Equinox EV from Chevy is impressively capable, exceeding expectations and holding its own in the market. It boasts a driving range that matches the Tesla Model Y, while being somewhat more affordable. The expectation is that its system will guide drivers between charging points as smoothly as Tesla's system. Notably, it's a modern and new electric vehicle, unlike the now older Model Y, and it's competing in today’s most popular category: compact crossover electric vehicles. Chevrolet has announced that they have the capacity to manufacture as many as 150,000 units annually, contingent on consumer demand.

The significant obstacle for the electric version of the Equinox could be the inconsistent expertise of the sales representatives at Chevrolet's esteemed associate locations, which are independently owned and run franchised dealerships.

2024 Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

At our test drive, a Chevrolet representative mentioned to the press, "We were informed that this model needs to hit the mark immediately." It appears the vehicle has achieved that goal. It remains to be seen if the sales approach, particularly with the increasing number of first-time electric vehicle buyers, meets the same standard.
