BMW Recalls Over 12,000 Mini Cooper SE Electric Hatchbacks Due to Potential Battery Short-Circuit Risks

BMW issues a recall for the Mini Cooper SE electric models manufactured between 2020 to 2024, citing a production defect that might lead to the electric vehicle's battery pack experiencing a short-circuit.

The Mini hatch's three-door variant, the Cooper SE, which runs solely on electricity, was launched in the 2020 model year. The recall affects 12,535 of these vehicles ranging from the 2020 to the 2024 model years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has indicated that the issue is with battery packs that might not have been manufactured to the proper standards.

Defects within these power cells might result in electrical failures, potentially leading to excessive heat build-up and, in uncommon instances, a "thermal incident," even if the car is stationary and switched off, according to the recall notices. BMW has acknowledged a couple of grievances from clients that might be connected to this problem, however, they have no knowledge of any incidents or harm linked to it.

The solution to the issue is an update to the software that comes at no cost, however, it requires a visit to a dealership to implement. BMW plans to send out letters to inform owners about scheduling a visit to their local dealership for the update on October 7, 2024. 2020 Model of the Mini

The Mini Cooper SE has announced another recall due to battery issues, following a smaller-scale recall earlier on. Back in April, there was a concern for 145 vehicles, ranging from the 2020 to 2024 model years, due to the risk of water damage to the battery pack, which could lead to a fire.

For the 2022 model year, the Cooper SE saw improvements in both its driving range and energy consumption, while maintaining a consistent price point during its manufacturing period. This positions it as one of the increasingly rare cost-effective electric vehicles on the market. A revamped electric model of the 2025 Mini Cooper hatchback is set to take its place, which will be introduced concurrently with a brand new electric variant of the Mini Countryman crossover for the first time.
