Francesco Bagnaia recovers from his Sprint race disaster to surpass championship frontrunner Jorge Martin and secure a win at the 2024 Catalan MotoGP in Barcelona.
Bagnaia, after conceding a win to Aleix Espargaro due to a crash on the final lap of the Sprint, trailed behind Martin and then made a decisive move on the inside at Turn 5 – the same turn where he had an accident the previous day – when there were 5 laps remaining.
The current champion gradually pulled ahead of the championship frontrunner, Martin, securing his third grand prix victory of the year.
A mere ten seconds after the front pair, Marc Marquez took advantage of the slipstream behind Aprilia's Sprint victor Aleix Espargaro, carefully managing his soft rear tire to secure the third spot on the podium.
Martin climbed from seventh to third position during the initial lap, subsequently executing consecutive overtaai-allcreator.com">king maneuvers at Turn 10 against Pedro Acosta and Bagnaia, capturing the lead by the fifth lap.
The Pramac Ducati standout, opting for a medium rear tire, alongside Acosta, who chose a soft rear, managed to break into the 1-minute 39-second range, creating a gap between them and Bagnaia.
Earlier in the race, the victor of the Sprint and the top qualifier, Espargaro, made his way into the 39-second range, catching up to Brad Binder's KTM, which was positioned in fourth place.
On lap 10, Espargaro and Raul Fernandez overtook a slowing Binder, while at the lead, newcomer sensation Acosta lost control and slipped from second place due to a crash.
The competition then divided into two leading packs: Martin and Bagnaia vied for the win against Espargaro and Fernandez, with Marc Marquez and Morbidelli (who eventually crashed) contesting for the last spot on the podium.
Marquez demonstrated superior strength, overtaking Fernandez and subsequently displacing local hero Espargaro from third place.
Following the use of the soft rear tyre during the Sprint, the weekend's peak temperatures, coupled with the comprehensive 24-lap race, led the majority of competitors to opt for the medium tyre for the grand prix.
The Marquez siblings, beginning from the 13th position (Alex) and 14th (Marc), along with Acosta in 5th and Jack Miller in 9th, took a gamble by opting for a soft rear tire at the last minute on the starting grid, hoping for a quick advancement.
In the initial stages of the competition, the pace was deliberately slow among the leading pack of six competitors – Bagnaia, Martin, Acosta, Binder, Espargaro, and Raul Fernandez – as they conserved their tires. Meanwhile, Marc Marquez found himself trailing behind Franco Morbidelli in eighth position during the early moments.
Enea Bastianini incurred a double long lap penalty for not completing a single long lap due to cutting across Turn 2. However, he also did not fulfill this penalty, leading to a 'ride-through' penalty that was included in his final race time.
Updated regulations for tyre pressure in 2024 dictate that competitors are required to maintain a minimum front tyre pressure of 1.8 bar, a decrease from the previous 1.88 bar, for at least 60% of a Grand Prix race distance, up from the former 50%, or for 30% of a Sprint race.
If a competitor doesn't achieve the required minimum in a Grand Prix, they will face a penalty of 16 seconds added to their race time post-event, or an 8-second penalty in the case of a Sprint or shorter race.
Training sessions for the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello are scheduled to begin on Friday morning.
