Verstappen’s Red Bull Future Under Scrutiny Amid Key Departures and Team Turmoil
New uncertainties arise about Max Verstappen's career with Red Bull amid departure of key figures
Is Max Verstappen considering a move from Red Bull? Prominent Dutch F1 reporter shares insights.
Speculation about Max Verstappen's future in Formula 1 has resurfaced due to key figures leaving Red Bull.
This year, discussions about the current world champion's career prospects intensified following Mercedes' overt efforts to attract Verstappen as a successor to Lewis Hamilton, who is set to join Ferrari next season.
In the midst of internal political disturbances at Red Bull due to accusations of sexual harassment and manipulative, dominating conduct directed at team leader Christian Horner, speculation arose regarding Verstappen’s continued involvement with the team.
Verstappen, bound by a contract through 2028, has consistently affirmed his commitment to staying with Red Bull, yet speculation about his career prospects persists.
Recent developments reveal that Red Bull has secured a new agreement with their motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko, a move that seems interlinked with Verstappen's own career prospects, dealing a setback to competitors who had aspirations of luring the Dutch driver away.
In response to inquiries about whether Verstappen will remain with Red Bull in 2025, Erik van Haren, a journalist from De Telegraaf, expressed his confidence on the F1 Nation Podcast. He noted, "Yes. However, it's important to mention that his affirmation came after being asked three or four times, and this was during an event in Austria."
He didn't mention it immediately from the start. If I recall correctly, it was the third question that demanded a simple 'yes or no' answer. Naturally, he couldn't respond with a no, as that would have triggered a crisis over the weekend.
"However, it appears his plan has consistently been to remain with Red Bull for the upcoming season. The only scenario where this might not have held true was if there was significant turmoil, such as the incident in Jeddah where rumors circulated about Helmut Marko facing suspension. During that situation, he made it quite clear, stating, 'if he leaves, I leave.' Ultimately, that situation did not come to pass, but it seems his dedication to staying with Red Bull through 2025 has been unwavering."
Nonetheless, van Haren acknowledged that it's still uncertain how the departures of Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley will influence Verstappen's perspective.
"Indeed, there's merit to what he mentioned at the year's start amidst all the inquiries – the significance of key personnel remaining with the team," van Haren elaborated. "Interestingly, now we're observing Newey and Wheatley departing in succession, just months apart."
This indicates that things are rather dynamic at Red Bull, but it's also mentioned that Jonathan Wheatley is moving to Audi to become team principal. This move could be seen as a step up for him, considering there's no room for such a position at Red Bull with Christian Horner at the helm. So, from that perspective, it can be viewed as a positive transition.
"I'm eager to hear Max's thoughts on this matter when we speak to him in Zandvoort on Thursday. While I doubt it will affect his plans for 2025, his decisions for 2026 could indeed be intriguing."
