Valtteri Bottas Unveiled: Beyond the Mullet, F1, and Coffee – An Exclusive Insight with Crash.net
Exclusive Interview with Valtteri Bottas: Discussing His Signature Mullet, Unique Character, and Love for Coffee
Crash.net's Lewis Larkam had the opportunity to have an exclusive conversation with Valtteri Bottas.
Valtteri Bottas is not just known for his 10 grand prix victories as an F1 driver; he's also a social media star, a coffee connoisseur, and a businessman, showcasing his diverse interests and talents.
In recent times, the 34-year-old Finnish individual has broken free from his previous restraints, showcasing his true self and adopting an attitude of complete indifference. He has stopped being overly self-critical and is now living his life to the fullest.
The future of the Sauber driver in Formula 1 beyond this season remains unclear, yet his confidence in himself has never been stronger. He feels content, self-assured, and at ease.
Although Formula 1 is a significant aspect of Bottas's life, he has discovered additional interests beyond racing, including cycling.
"When asked about his interests beyond racing, Bottas revealed to Crash.net that cycling is his top choice."
"I'm really into biking, enjoying both asphalt and off-road competitions. Indeed, I'm quite passionate about cycling. It's definitely my top interest following Formula 1."
His newfound affection was ignited by his significant other, Tiffany Cromwell, a pro cyclist from Australia.
"At first, my driving force was to match her pace," Bottas says with a chuckle. "That's the reason I began working out. Currently, I can stay on par with her across most landscapes.
"I've realized the captivating nature of this sport, as it's one where you're the driving force, and when you start to notice your progress, it becomes incredibly compelling."
So, what does Bottas consider an ideal day when he's not zooming around in Formula 1 cars at speeds of 320kph?
"He mentions, 'I usually sleep in until about 9:30 to 10 in the morning. Then, I enjoy a nice cup of coffee. For breakfast, I like to have eggs and avocado toast, followed by a pleasant bike ride."
"Afterward, the remainder of the afternoon is dedicated to enjoying the sauna, followed by a delicious meal."
He mentions his favorite indulgence is quite typical, involving either a homemade burger with fries or pizza.

Exhibiting his distinctive character and signature style
Over the recent years, Bottas has emerged as one of the most notable figures for his distinctive charm. During the previous Australian Grand Prix, he made a memorable appearance in the Melbourne paddock sporting a tank top and flip-flops.
This aspect of Bottas wasn't apparent during his stint with Mercedes. Bottas rose to prominence when the Silver Arrows were at their peak, yet he soon became a secondary figure, aiding Lewis Hamilton in his quest for championships. Additionally, his position lacked security since he was only given contracts on an annual basis.
During his tenure with Mercedes, Bottas experienced his peak performance, securing 10 victories, achieving 20 pole positions, landing in the championship's top three on four occasions, and contributing to the team's five straight constructors’ championships. However, the relentless competition at the forefront of the field and being relegated to a supporting 'wingman' position wore him down over time.
George Russell's acquisition of the Mercedes seat for the 2022 season paved the way for Bottas to secure a position with Alfa Romeo (currently known as Sauber). This move provided him with the long-term stability he had desired. Following his transition to the Swiss team, Bottas has shown a significant transformation in his approach.
Bottas responds, saying, "It didn't happen abruptly. It began progressively. Perhaps it was due to a change in environment, a new partner," when inquired about the moment he ceased to care about others' opinions of him.
"Experiencing stability in the sport for the first time, coupled with gaining maturity. Grasping the mechanics of the world and the intricacies of F1."
I've recently begun to feel more at ease with who I am, giving myself permission to poke fun at myself and enjoy the lighter side of life.
"Truly grasping in life that not everything needs to be taken so seriously has been a revelation. I've grown to be more self-assured and at ease with who I am, all while learning to enjoy a good chuckle."
A significant aspect of Bottas' emerging Aussie persona is his signature mullet hairstyle, a distinctive style he adopted towards the close of 2022. He's thoroughly enjoying his mullet journey and intends to keep it that way.
"He begins by sharing, “Initially, it seemed almost humorous to me. This was because, by 2022, my hair had grown noticeably longer since it was the close of the season and I hadn’t had the chance to visit a barber.
"So, I teasingly told Tiffany, 'once we return to Australia, I plan on getting a mullet cut'. To which she responded, skeptically, 'sure you will'. But then, I went ahead and made an appointment. I was acquainted with a guy who made videos locally, so I proposed, 'how about we make this interesting and you come record the whole thing'."
"It spread like wildfire and then it just stuck around. That's when I realized, the mullet and moustache combo was indeed awesome. Very characteristic of Australia. A signature look."
Bottas has fully engaged with social media platforms and has featured in humorous commercials, a venture he didn't feel self-assured enough to pursue during his tenure with Mercedes. At the beginning of this year, he made a memorable advertisement for Uber, humorously suggesting that his acting in the ad merited an Oscar, a sentiment that was warmly welcomed by his supporters.
"I handle all aspects of my social media and usually, if something amusing occurs, I aim to post it. Folks enjoy ordinary, goofy things," he mentions.
Certain aspects were clearly handled by different organizations. Take the Uber ride-sharing promotion, for instance; that was entirely their creation. However, when I saw it and they inquired if I was interested in participating, my immediate reaction was, 'absolutely! That seems enjoyable.'
"Very few things are meticulously organized in advance. Usually, things unfold naturally for me, and that's where the joy lies."
Bottas displays a fearless attitude toward public exposure. This trait was notably apparent when he posted a photo revealing his naked buttocks emerging from the water as he took a swim in a river in Aspen, during a vacation in May 2022.
The message garnered widespread attention, and Bottas harnessed this popularity positively, generating more than $50,000 for philanthropic causes through the sale of image prints. This success led to the creation of a naked calendar, which brought in over $150,000 for the Movember men's health organization through purchases made on 'www.bottass.com'.

The Entrepreneurial Ventures of Bottas
Venturing beyond the race tracks, Bottas has made significant investments in areas he's deeply passionate about, specifically coffee, gin, and wine. He has acquired a 20% ownership in Kahiwa Coffee, a roastery based in his native city of Lahti. Additionally, he has introduced his own brands of wine (Ihana) and gin (Oath) to the market.
"Bottas describes his business endeavors as intriguing, noting that while some are progressing at a slower pace, they are mostly driven by passion. He emphasizes the desire not to incur losses, hoping instead to turn a profit eventually."
"However, it begins with a strong passion. This is what makes engaging with these projects truly enjoyable when you have a genuine interest. So, it's quite positive. Establishing a solid foundation for the time when racing eventually comes to an end. Ultimately, everything should be operating smoothly."
"Whether it's coffee or gin, it allows me to select how much work I take on. Clearly, it becomes tougher during the peak season," he remarks.
"I have a team assisting me, allowing me the flexibility to select when to concentrate on additional tasks. However, I also have the option to step away for several weeks while others continue to support the effort."
Kahiwa remains headquartered in Finland, yet offers worldwide shipping. Bottas emphasizes the importance of beginning on a modest scale and steering clear of what he terms as “foolish leaps”.
"Our digital storefront allows us to conduct sales on a global scale, and we've seen an increase in growth each year. Indeed, our goal is to broaden our reach," he elaborates. "However, we're cautious about avoiding hasty decisions. Therefore, we've developed a strategic plan for expansion."
"We've recently acquired a larger coffee roaster, enabling us to increase our roasting capacity. Previously, our roasting capabilities were somewhat restricted. This represents a significant step forward for us."
For Bottas, the ideal coffee is a must. His mornings begin with a flat white, transitioning later to espresso. Although he's experimented with creating latte art, upon viewing the author's attempts, he admits they might surpass his.
Bottas, whose career path in Formula 1 is still up in the air due to limited available spots for the 2025 season, is adamant that his journey in F1 is not coming to an end. He is not considering retirement at this point and has dismissed the idea that his entrepreneurial ventures are preparations for life after racing.
"Undoubtedly, I'm aware that one day racing will come to an end, but I won't be left feeling void,” he states. “There are activities that will occupy my time, yet that's not the primary motive. The reason is simply because those are the things I wish to pursue.
"In any sport, it's crucial to have something to focus on after it concludes. However, that time hasn't arrived just yet."
