Title: “Fabio di Giannantonio Faces 80% Risk of Shoulder Dislocations as He Pushes Through 2024 MotoGP Season
Fabio di Giannantonio: High Probability of Further Shoulder Dislocations
Fabio di Giannantonio: "Any fall I experience carries an 80% likelihood that my shoulder could dislocate again."
Fabio di Giannantonio will continue racing for the rest of the 2024 MotoGP season, despite knowing there's an "80%" likelihood of further shoulder dislocations.
He mentioned that they would keep an eye on his shoulder for the rest of the season and then determine if surgery would be necessary.
The VR46 team rider suffered a dislocation of his left shoulder during a practice session on Friday at the Red Bull Ring. This injury comes on top of a prior right collarbone injury he sustained at the Sachsenring, ultimately leading to his withdrawal from the Austrian event.
Back at Aragon last weekend, di Giannantonio stood out by finishing ahead of his team-mate Marco Bezzecchi in seventh place in the grand prix. However, a penalty for tyre pressure later pushed him down to eighth.
Having had only a few days to recover, the Italian believes he is at just 60% of his physical fitness for the initial Misano round this weekend.
According to di Giannantonio, the weekend in Aragon exceeded all expectations. "I never imagined I could have such a race before arriving here," he remarked. "Even starting from the back, I managed numerous overtakes and, honestly, it was a really impressive race."
"Right now, we're focusing on pain management, as I need more time to heal my right collarbone from Sachsenring and my left shoulder from Austria."
"Physically, I'm currently a bit stretched to my limits, but I'm not concerned about my speed. I feel very comfortable with the bike."
Ranked ninth in the world championship and as the second-highest GP23 rider following Marc Marquez, di Giannantonio disclosed that he continues to be at risk for additional dislocations.
"Right now, I feel like I'm at 60% physically, and honestly, I believe it will take quite a while to fully recover," he mentioned. "The shoulder is a very delicate area to injure, so it's quite problematic. Additionally, participating in two consecutive races isn't ideal at this point."
"In my opinion, by the time we get to Misano 2, I should be around 80% recovered, or at least I hope so. However, it's also a fact that from now until the end of the season, or possibly indefinitely, any fall I take carries about an 80% chance of my shoulder dislocating again."
"Currently, the situation is quite crucial, and we need to find ways to manage this issue."
“We are going to keep an eye on this shoulder for the remainder of the season. After that, we will determine whether surgery or another treatment is necessary.”
Giannantonio is set to stay with VR46 for the upcoming season and will be upgraded to factory-spec equipment under a new agreement directly with Ducati.
