Stellantis to Launch a $25,000 Jeep EV in the U.S.: CEO Tavares Outlines Affordable Electrification Plans

Published

on

The CEO of Stellantis, Carlos Tavares, announced during a Bernstein investor conference last week that an electric Jeep valued at $25,000 will be hitting the American market in the near future. This was reported by CNBC among other news outlets.

Tavares stated at the event, which took place before the recent unveiling of the Wagoneer S, that a reasonably priced Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) would be one that costs 20,000 euros in Europe or $25,000 in America. He emphasized the company's commitment to delivering a BEV to the U.S. market that is secure, environmentally friendly, and affordable at the $25,000 price point, asserting they will achieve this goal.

Tavares noted that Stellantis is currently offering the Citroën e-C3 electric vehicle in Europe for 20,000 euros. He stated that the company is applying the same knowledge and skills from that venture to introduce a Jeep at a similar price point in the American market.

Jeep's New

Stellantis has introduced a fully electric model of the Jeep Avenger in the European market, with a price tag of 35,000 euros, roughly equivalent to $37,800, as pointed out by CNBC. The company has decided against offering the Avenger in the American market, where it would be the smallest model available. Additionally, there are talks of increasing the number of traditional gas-powered versions of the vehicle in Europe than initially intended.

Jeep has primarily concentrated on offering plug-in hybrid models within the U.S. market. The company's CEO, Antonio Filosa, reaffirmed this week that the Wrangler 4xe holds the top spot as the most popular plug-in hybrid in the country, with the Grand Cherokee 4xe also ranking high in sales. Additionally, Jeep has announced the upcoming release of a 4xe plug-in hybrid version of the Gladiator pickup truck.

The electric version of the Wagoneer S is set to hit the market carrying a starting price tag upwards of $70,000. It is expected to be succeeded by the Recon, akin to the Wrangler, which was initially introduced as an all-electric vehicle but is now rumored to potentially include a hybrid engine alternative as well.

Upcoming 2024 Model of the Jeep Wag

In the latter part of 2021, Tavares stated that the production of electric vehicles is 50% more expensive for the company compared to vehicles with internal combustion engines. He described this cost difference as exceeding what the industry can maintain, noting that the increased expense was too substantial to be transferred to the consumers.

The risk of low-cost electric vehicles from China entering the European market is now materializing. In the United States, this influx is currently being hindered by trade regulations, with President Biden's administration increasing import duties recently.

During the recent unveiling of the Jeep Wagoneer S electric SUV, company officials announced forthcoming extended-range versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer 4xe. These will feature substantial plug-in battery packs yet will retain the capacity for three-row seating. Jeep's strategy includes an array of vehicle designs incorporating mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids, fully electric vehicles, and more, offering numerous possible configurations.

Hyundai's electric vehicle "Metaplant" in Georgia, along with Kia's Georgia facility, may initially rely on battery packs not manufactured in the U.S., potentially leading to complexities.

The Wagoneer and its upscale counterpart, the Grand Wagoneer, are also joining the electric revolution. However, they're incorporating a unique method, utilizing a large battery and employing the engine as a generator, similar to the technique used in the Ramcharger.

The promise of a base model with a starting price of $34,995 is still on the table for later this year, and this includes eligibility for the electric vehicle tax credit.

Following the halt of Tesla's Supercharger expansion, various networks are strategizing to increase their number of charging points and are looking to employ former Tesla staff who were affected by the stoppage.
