Schumacher’s Historic Ferrari F2001b Hits the Auction Block: A Glimpse into the Legacy of a Formula 1 Legend
Vintage Michael Schumacher Ferrari F1 vehicle set for auction
Iconic 2002 Formula 1 car slated for sale
This week, the auction block will feature the F2001b Ferrari Formula 1 vehicle piloted by Michael Schumacher in the early stages of the 2002 season.
The F2001b model was a revised edition of the vehicle that Schumacher piloted to his fourth world championship in 2001, as Ferrari was developing its contender for 2002.
The frame took part in the first two events of the 2002 season.
Schumacher clinched victory in the first race of the season, piloting his F2001b to a win at the Australian Grand Prix, finishing 18.6 seconds ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya in the Williams.
The German driver secured a third-place finish in the F2001b during the subsequent Malaysian Grand Prix, having achieved Ferrari's 150th pole position the previous day at Sepang.
Starting with the third race of the season at the Brazilian Grand Prix, the F2002 took over from the F2001b. Schumacher dominated with this car, securing victories in 10 races and coming in second in the others, leading him to his fifth world championship title.
Schumacher and Ferrari's superiority that season was so overwhelming that he secured the championship title during the French GP in July, with six races still remaining.
Chassis number 215 of the F2001b model is set to be auctioned at the Sotheby’s Sealed event during the Monterey Car Week in California, scheduled from August 16th to 19th.
Thus far, the car has not been assigned a monetary value, but a Schumacher-driven F2002 chassis fetched £5 million at a 2019 auction.
In a recent event, the F2003-GA, which was the car Michael Schumacher piloted to secure his record-breaking sixth world championship – making him the most decorated F1 driver in history at that point – was auctioned off for £13 million during Sotheby’s Luxury Week sale in Geneva in 2022.
Past auction sales of Schumacher's Ferraris have featured an F2001 model, fetching £5.5 million in 2017, and a 1998 F300 model that was sold for £5.3 million in 2022.
