Ricciardo Apologizes to Hulkenberg After Italian GP Clash; RB Team Faces Challenges at Monza
Daniel Ricciardo comments on incident with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I’ve said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo shares his thoughts on the mishap with Haas at the F1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo has expressed that he offered an apology to Nico Hulkenberg for their collision on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
During the initial lap of Sunday's race at Monza, RB racer Ricciardo was engaged in a mid-field skirmish with Hulkenberg when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo believed he had enough room but experienced a collision – resulting in Hulkenberg's Haas being pushed off the track and losing a position to his teammate, Kevin Magnussen.
The individual from Australia received an initial five-second penalty for the incident, but subsequently, a further 10-second penalty was enforced because one of his crew members made contact with his car during the time he was fulfilling the original penalty in his pit stop.
Ricciardo finished in 13th place, concluding a challenging race for the RB team on their home turf.
"In the end, we just didn't have the speed today, penalties aside," he noted.
"We gave it our best shot, and the side-by-side competition at the beginning was thrilling, but I ended up colliding with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I had a conversation with him. I believed there was enough space between us, but after feeling the contact, I realized I hadn't allowed him sufficient space, so I offered my apologies."
"Competing is challenging because even the slightest differences can have a big impact."
"Afterward, the car seemed fine, and we gave it our all given the circumstances. From Friday afternoon until today, my goal was to extract every bit of performance possible from the vehicle."
"I personally feel much improved this weekend, and we were on the verge of earning some points."
Tsunoda Ends Race Disappointed
According to team Laurent Mekies, RB's performance in the Italian GP was significantly influenced by Hulkenberg's actions, following an incident where the Haas driver collided with Yuki Tsunoda, causing the race to end prematurely for the driver from Japan.
"Tsunoda expressed his disappointment, lamenting that his race ended just a few laps in after a collision with Nico."
"I made an effort to maintain as much distance as I could, yet it appeared that he froze up, leading to him losing his grip and colliding with me."
"Regrettably, the vehicle had to be withdrawn from the race due to damage sustained on its underside."
"Immediately, I sensed something was off and attempted to keep going, yet the vehicle was skidding, making it impossible for me to control it."
"Up next are the races in Baku and Singapore, where we anticipate our car to excel, leading to potentially successful weekends."
Mekies' irritation with the Tsunoda situation arises because he missed crucial time on the track in the newly upgraded RB vehicle that was introduced at Monza.
"Regarding the race that took place today, it could be argued that Hulkenberg played a leading role. Daniel was penalized with a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Subsequently, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in our decision to retire the car from the race," he commented.
The most disappointing element of Yuki's retirement is the loss of 40 laps, which would have enhanced our comprehension of the updates we debuted in this event.
Daniel was subsequently given an additional 10-second penalty due to our improper execution of the initial one.
"In this situation, it's essential for us to reassess our methods and draw lessons from the error made today. Such incidents occur, but overall, our pit crew's performance has been outstanding throughout the season."
