Red Bull’s F1 Struggle: Fighting ‘One-Legged’ in Title Race Amid Perez’s Slump, Says Damon Hill
Damon Hill asserts Red Bull is at a disadvantage in the Formula 1 championship race due to Sergio Perez's recent performance dip.
Damon Hill, the world champion of 1996, remarked that Sergio Perez's recent performance has put Red Bull at a disadvantage, likening it to fighting "somewhat handicapped" in their competition with Formula 1 adversaries Ferrari and McLaren.
Perez kicked off the season impressively, securing the runner-up spot behind his Red Bull team mate, Max Verstappen, in three out of the first four races. However, his performance has waned recently, just as Red Bull's Formula 1 competitors, Ferrari and McLaren, have started to intensify their challenge.
Over the recent trio of races in Miami, Imola, and Monaco, Perez has secured fourth and eighth positions and experienced an early exit due to a first-lap crash after failing to advance beyond Q1. Nevertheless, Red Bull has shown confidence in the Mexican driver by awarding him a fresh contract for two more years.
"Hill expressed on the F1 Nation podcast that he firmly believes the competition is heating up, with two teams demonstrating speed and narrowing the distance to Red Bull at various tracks."
"I believe that if Red Bull is provided with a track that suits them, it could be challenging to overtake them. However, it's important to remember that both Ferrari and McLaren have a pair of drivers each who are capable of being aggressive competitors."
"It's uncertain if the same can be said about Checo. Currently, Red Bull seems to be at a disadvantage if they aim to defend their position.
"Being three-tenths behind Verstappen isn't sufficient these days, as numerous cars can bridge that gap. The differences have increasingly narrowed."
"In terms of the points, there's a noticeable decline. Max's streak of complete supremacy appears to be waning, and there's still a significant stretch ahead. This season is quite extensive."
McLaren's Lando Norris, who impressively secured his first F1 win in Miami by keeping Verstappen at bay, suggested that Perez's challenges in keeping pace with his teammate have paved the way for new possibilities.
"Norris expressed optimism about the future, noting, "We have numerous opportunities ahead of us and anticipate more developments. If circumstances improve, we'll be well-positioned to regain ground against our competitors."
"Thus, particularly since I believe we're the team, alongside Ferrari at least, that consistently has both cars performing at their best in every session and every race during qualifying."
"I believe that when you examine much of the racing grid, it's apparent they haven't quite achieved a cohesive performance. Typically, there's one driver who delivers an outstanding lap followed by a strong race, while the other doesn't quite match up."
"I believe a key advantage for us is consistently having both cars in competitive positions, allowing us to effectively contend with Ferrari currently."
