Perez Aims for Spanish Grand Prix Comeback After Montreal Missteps
Sergio Perez acknowledges the necessity for a turnaround at the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix following a disappointing performance in Canada.
Sergio Perez has admitted that he must have a “successful weekend” at the F1 Spanish Grand Prix after referring to his experience in Canada as a “disaster.”
The Mexican driver experienced a challenging weekend in Montreal, failing to move beyond Q1 for the second consecutive race, and then suffered an early exit from Sunday's grand prix after struggling to make any significant headway through the pack.
In the past three races, Perez has managed to accumulate only four points, dropping to the fifth position in the drivers' standings, trailing his teammate Max Verstappen by 87 points.
"Entering Spain, I'm aware that I need a triumphant weekend, following a catastrophe in Canada," Perez remarked.
"Occasionally, circumstances necessitate a minor recalibration, and that's precisely what we've undertaken following the previous race. I've spent time in Milton Keynes collaborating with our team, aiming to pinpoint areas for improvement to maximize my performance with this vehicle."
"I feel sure about the car and its capability, but I have to demonstrate that more effectively on the Barcelona circuit. The Spanish Grand Prix always brings me joy; it's almost like being at home, with everyone making me feel incredibly welcomed."
"I'm quite familiar with this track, and the RB20 is expected to perform well on such circuits. Therefore, it's our responsibility to execute our plan flawlessly and achieve the outcome we believe we can."
Christian Horner, the team leader for Red Bull, has called on Perez to bounce back to his earlier performance levels, following a series of challenging races, especially now that he faces a three-place grid penalty in Spain.
"Checo had a terrible weekend, and clearly, we sustained some damage. He must make a strong comeback in Barcelona," Horner conveyed to Sky Sports.
"Fortunately for us, Ferrari faced a setback and failed to score any points, which somewhat eased our situation. However, it's crucial that both of our cars earn points. We managed to dodge a bullet this time, but it's imperative that Checo returns to his early-year form, starting from the Barcelona races moving forward."
