China executed a scientist in 2016 on charges of espionage, as highlighted in a documentary that unveiled ten startling cases.
The report mentions that in late 2020, an undisclosed Chinese IT firm secured a business deal to gather electronic signal information across China's extensive railway systems. This contract was from an international company, which previously specialized in market research prior to offering technical support services in the Chinese railway sector.
The ministry reported that the overseas firm, hindered by Beijing's Covid restrictions from dispatching its staff to China, delegated the tasks to local Chinese vendors. It was also discovered that the company served numerous clients, among them foreign intelligence services, defense and military entities, and governmental bodies.
The report indicated that the Chinese firm knew the international business could have hidden agendas, yet, lured by an attractive deal, it proceeded to purchase and set up systems as outlined in the international contract. The company gathered information at designated sites and also carried out mobile examinations and data gathering across various cities and along major high-speed railway routes, as directed by the overseas client.
The department announced that the initiative gathered 500 gigabytes of data over the course of a month, encompassing information from Internet of Things signals, mobile and train communications, and secure networks.
