China to Intensify Military Awareness in Schools with National Defence Education Law Amendments
Chinese students to receive increased national defense education to boost military consciousness
Proposals under review by China's highest legislative authority include major revisions to a law originally enacted in 2001.
According to recent legislative changes, Chinese educational institutions are required to enhance their national defense education programs to better inform students about military service.
The suggested changes, currently being examined by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), involve provisions regarding the curriculum of military training for students and the responsibilities of military units, as reported by China's state media on Tuesday.
China's highest legislative panel commenced a four-day session in Beijing on Tuesday. The agenda includes reviewing modifications to the National Defence Education Law, as well as proposed changes to the Supervision Law and the Statistics Law.
"A draft released in state media suggests that schools should integrate national defense education with military service training to boost students' understanding of military duties as mandated by law and foster a positive environment where serving in the military is regarded as prestigious."
"The report also notes enhancements to the policies regarding the initiation of education and training programs for reservists."
