China carried out the execution of a scientist accused of espionage in 2016, as highlighted in a documentary that unveiled 10 startling incidents.
The report mentions that an undisclosed Chinese IT firm secured a business deal in late 2020 to gather electronic signal data across China's extensive railway systems. This contract was from an overseas company, which previously conducted market research before breaking into the Chinese rail sector to offer technical support services.
The ministry reported that the international firm, hindered from dispatching its staff to China due to Covid-related restrictions imposed by Beijing, delegated the tasks to local Chinese suppliers. Furthermore, it was discovered that this company served a diverse clientele, encompassing foreign intelligence bodies, military and defense entities, and various government sectors.
The report indicated that the Chinese firm knew the international company could have hidden agendas, yet, lured by an attractive deal, proceeded to purchase and set up the equipment as stipulated in the foreign company's contract. It gathered data at designated sites and carried out mobile testing and data collection across various cities and along high-speed railway lines as required by the overseas client.
The department reported that the initiative amassed 500 gigabytes of data over the course of a month. This data encompassed information from Internet of Things signals, mobile and railway communications, as well as secure networks.
