Michelin Introduces Harder Front Tyres at Misano MotoGP to Meet 2024 Bikes’ Performance Demands
Michelin makes a bold move: Introduces tougher front tires for Misano MotoGP
"We've contemplated these adjustments since the previous year, and the data gathered from the beginning of the 2024 season has prompted us to make this bold decision."
In reaction to the enhanced performance of motorcycles, Michelin has raised the durability of the three leading tyre rubber mixtures for the upcoming MotoGP event in Misano this weekend.
The rear specifications from Misano in 2023 will remain in use.
Unlike the recently introduced track surface at Aragon, the Misano circuit is familiar territory due to numerous private MotoGP trials and the yearly occurrence of the San Marino Grand Prix, a tradition since 2007.
A thorough understanding of the track, along with the evaluation of data gathered over time, has led Michelin to provide a more durable front tire option for this weekend.
"Piero Taramasso, the two-wheel racing manager at Michelin, expressed, “The consideration to implement these adjustments has been on our minds since the previous year, and the statistics gathered from the beginning of the 2024 season solidified our decision to opt for more durable rubber compounds for the front.”
The tires we introduced in the previous season were exceptionally well-suited, allowing us to surpass all previous benchmarks. Nonetheless, considering the enhanced capabilities of the 2024 motorcycles and the frequent upgrades they've received, we've come to understand that our collaborators now require a slightly altered type of tire, particularly for the front.
"This decision was made to provide riders with improved consistency in performance and an enhanced sense of control."
Misano presents a mostly level and intricate circuit, challenging for the tyres due to its mix of rapid and leisurely turns. Certain areas, like the Tramonto hairpin or the Curvone, a lengthy, swift right curve, place considerable strain on the tyres.
"It's understood that the ideal performance mix involves using tougher rubber compounds for the front tires, combined with a rear tire compound that effectively transfers the power onto the track."
This month, Misano will host a pair of MotoGP race weekends, in addition to an official testing session scheduled for the coming Monday.
