Mercedes-Benz Recalls Thousands of EVs Over Critical Software Glitch

Published

on

Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for approximately 15,000 electric vehicles in the United States due to a software glitch in the battery management system that may result in a loss of driving power.

The vehicle recall encompasses all models of the EQS and EQE four-doors, in addition to both the EQS and EQE sport utility vehicles, ranging from the 2023 to 2025 model years, depending on the model. Recall paperwork indicates that these automobiles could be equipped with battery management software that "may not align with the latest production standards, potentially resulting in the high-voltage system turning off under certain conditions."

The particular incident refers to an excessive influx of diagnostic information to the battery management system, which is termed as "diagnostic data overflow." This occurs when other internal control modules persistently bombard the battery management system with diagnostic inquiries, leading to an overload of its storage capacity. As a consequence, this activates the contractors resulting in the disconnection of the battery pack from the vehicle's powertrain.

Mercedes has initiated a recall in response to an inquiry prompted by notifications concerning the battery pack appearing on the dashboards of some vehicles. This action was taken after the initial report surfaced at a Danish dealership in October 2023. Vehicles affected by this recall have been identified through production documentation. Mercedes has clarified that all other units of the EQS and EQE models, both sedan and SUV, are equipped with software that aligns with the latest production standards.

Individuals with vehicles subject to the recall are required to arrange visits with their car dealers to get the new battery management software put in at no cost. Unfortunately, this fix is not available through an over-the-air (OTA) update.

The introduction of the EQ series of exclusive electric vehicles in the United States commenced with the 2022 model year EQS sedan. By 2025, Mercedes plans to enhance the EQS by incorporating a heat pump and upgrading the braking system, with intentions to extend these improvements across their entire electric vehicle range soon after.

The trajectory of Mercedes' electric vehicle offerings remains uncertain. The company disclosed a postponement in its electric vehicle goals earlier this year, indicating that traditional gas-powered engines will continue to be a part of its offerings deep into the 2030s. Additionally, there are rumors that the company has discontinued a project focused on developing electric vehicles with extended range, despite having initiated testing with prototypes modeled on the EQS.

It's said that Mercedes is considering eliminating the EQ label used for its electric vehicles, although no official statement has been made. Indications of a new naming strategy are seen in the electric G-Class model, which bears the designation "G 580 with EQ Technology."
